I use a lenco goldring for sessions, but am restoring a 4hf to use as my preference deck. In standby is my sl 1210 which never sounds as good as the lenco. I also have a thorens td160 with a George Haddcock single pivot arm.

The 1210 has what seems to be quite a resonant arm compared to the lenco. But there is nothing good about the lenco arm compared!! The lenco is more feedback tolerant. I run all old gear and the 1210 looks out of place. I would use my thorens but the speed change is too unreliable.

I tried a 1210 at home on my hi-fi system and did not like it much!
But the 1210 has a decent drive. It can be improved by changing the tone arm to something decent like a Rega and you can also modify other parts like the main bearing.
I have recently got hold of a Garrard 401 and there are lots of mods and parts to service these decks.
Getting 2 of them up to spec with decent tone arms and plinth systems would be fairly expensive.
When I used to run decks for gigs the main thing was the deck support.
If ever possible the decks should be supported from a solid foundation or floor.
I used to carry around a braced skeletal metal frame deck table and 3" thick stone slabs to place the decks on. First job on turning up at a venue would be to jump around on the floor to find what was solid and what bounced and if possible set up the DJ on the solid part.
For permanent installs the best results came from columns built into the DJ booth rising up from solid foundations and not touching the rest of the booth.
One reasonable idea for a festival set-up is 45 gallon oil drums full of sand.
If you can get rid of the acoustic feedback from turntables you can make an audience very happy. They may not know why they are having such a good time but getting it right can transform a venue.Smile

Would a feedback problem be one of the reasons why many sound systems play cd instead of vinyl...

Has the sound systems become too heavy to use turntable? Unless its some old school deck and/or mounted on a heavy piece of concrete etc. What turntable does Aba use?

At the club I have played a lot they have 1210 and concordes and almost everytime I manage to get some feedback there. Altough I think its mainly because there are a lot of monitors to the stage which add to the vibrations. The interesting thing is that Ive managed to get feedback even after Ive put something under the turntables feet,so I guess that would be the tonearm or the concordes?

Looking forward to see how the pioneer pl-100 survives the testLOL I can test it with the original cartridge and needle but I also got a shure m447 from a friend and ordered a n44c stylus for that.

Maybe why sounds have turned to cds is because it's easier to download a rare tune from youube than to get a vinyl copy. Also easier to play your own creations than spend out on getting a dubplate cut.
From a feedback point, the 1210 seems reasonable at bass frequency's but mid seems to trigger it. What I have found from experience is that the decks with wobbly springs are most problematic. If they don't feedback, then they jump.
One of the best dances we did was at a venue New to us. We set up where we thought best..... great sound. People started to arrive and dance. Needle starts to jump. We ended up stripping the set down and rebuilding in a better acoustic spot while the crowd started a slow clap. Pressure!! Anyway, when we put the first tune on, the crowd went mad. That was the first many great dances in that venue (the Richmond, now a travellers hostel in Brighton)

Does someone actually do that, thats weakLOL

The shure m447 with n44c should be hard to get to jump. Infact its a replacement stylus not shures original but it should do the same work. The n44c´s are used in jukeboxes and are supposed to be good if the records are old, wore down,or in bad shape.

What was the name of your machine valvehead? I cant get enough of stories about sessions and sound system cultureLOL

Respect!
