Hi everyone!
I'm new to this forum as I have only just started to piece together a sound system, I'm a bit confused as to whether my amp is powerful enough to power the speakers I'm getting (I will be getting the speakers regardless and upgrading the amp if not) I'm getting 4 celestion dl4 speakers which run at 10-75w, my amp however, only provides 30w/channel with 4 speaker ports... does this mean I would ideally need an amp which runs at 75 watts/channel? Is that how it works? My brother used to run this amp with 2 dl4's and 2 other 20w speakers... but they just arent good quality and I've fallen in love with the dl range. thankyou very much if you can help! I'd be really greatful! Joe. |

For home listening and as long as you're not gonna turn the bass up to maximum, then they'll be fine.
Welcome to the forum btw. |

As a general rule of thumb for home listening/hi-fi you should use an amp that is no more than half the max rating of the speakers.
Thus your 75w speakers should be fine with up to about 40w amp. Any more than that and it becomes too easy to blow your home speakers!

Another note, (very) generally speaking you'll be fine hooking two speakers to each channel. More than that can stress the amplifier.

Thank you very much! someone has just told me that the 10-75w figure I gave you is for a pair, meaning that each individual speaker is half of that... each individual speaker is 5-37.5w and the amp puts out 35w per channel making the speakers very slightly overpowered for my amp, will this damage my amp or speakers?

It depends a bit on whether the amp is 35w into 4 or 8 ohm. And you´re more likely to damage the speakers before the amp!
The important thing is to use your ears and not drive the speakers into distortion. If you find that the amplifier runs out of power (clips) before the speakers feel that they are working at their maximum, then maybe you do need a bigger amp. Otherwise don´t worry too much about it. |
