Which is the more efficient way to run amp? At 4x 8r stereo or 2x 4r bridged?

Which amplifier are you talking about?
A few rules of thumb with class D amps: Higher impedances are more efficient than lower. Idle losses make up a massive proportion of the consumed power. System efficiency is generally highest at full power, with an 8 ohm load.

Best way to do this is to buy one of these http://www.hobbyhot.com/hobbyhot-p0-high-voltage-and-precision-wattmeter-pr-2633.html
And measure the power consumption of your system at 90db pink noise and full power pink noise to find the most efficient way. You'll need an SPL meter to keep the measure the level accurately!

4*8 ohms should be more efficient.
I advise buying one of those little power-meters though. You'll learn alot about how best to run your system

I have the 2-channel version of that .... working well with 2 x 8R PA-type speakers paralleled across the bridged o/p. Stable/sweet-sounding when driven quite hard .... gets a bit warm ... so need to get around to modding it with a fan. Yours should drive 4 x 8R peakers in this way well .... BTW this is not a class D design - calls itself class GH. More efficient than class AB though. |

What sorta run times you getting of which battery?
I'll be high passing around 80hz and will have a 110ah battery. |

Generally was getting about 5 hours from a well-used 45Ah car battery - no HPF other than the built-in subsonic - playing reggae. Would have thought you'd get at least 6-7 hours with a good 110Ah leisure battery .... should be a fair bit more if you HPF at 80. |

That entirely depend on what impedance the amp is designed for. A typical car audio amp is more efficient with a 4 ohm load than a 8 ohm load. If we're talking class D amp that is. For almost all other amp types like class AB and class G/H, those are generally more efficient the higher the impedance. Edited by Saturnus - 22 January 2012 at 7:40am |
