Ok I have a problem to deal with, we have 2 Shure SM58 transmitters. I'm not with them right now but I'm sure they say something else on them too, PGX perhaps
![]() My question is what is the cheapest receiver that I can use with these handsets. Iv been looking at various models of receivers made by sure, non of which seem that cheap, unfortunately it's a problem that has to be solved with as little money as possible as its extra job to be done that we had not planned on before this gig. Any suggestions? Does anyone have one for sale? Any experiences that warn me off buying a cheap alternative? |

I used to have one of these (awful) mics, I think you might be out of luck, the frequency is set by an infra-red communication between the transmitter and receiver, so I reckon you're gonna need the genuine PGX2 receiver :/

Why are they awful? The XLR version are industry standard? Is it worth just selling the two units that we have and buying something new? If so what would your suggestion be?

They are not top of the bill (the wireless part that is), but still good value for money.
If you have the PGX2SM58, the (only) receiver that goes with them is PGX4 in the same frequency range. You will find the frequency range under the battery cover, printed after the type of transmitter. It's usually a letter and a digit or letter, like "L5", "T1", "H6" or "JB" something in that style. Every designation corresponds with a frequency range and you probably have PGX2's in the range for your country, the UK. So if you decide to buy receivers, they must correspond with the handhelds for them to work. If you have PGX2- H6, you need PGX4- H6. If you don't have PGX series, but another series from Shure, the name giving is similar. Like SLX2- H5 works witt SLX4- H5 or UR2- H4E goes with UR4- H4E receivers and so on. If you only need extra wireless mics for one day or a few days, I would just rent something, not buy receivers. Otherwise just stick with the PGX's, they do work nicely. |

Ok thanks bro, now talking with some guys about a unit that has come up second hand. Could you suggest another radio mic that would be better? Renting them is an obvious option, just thought that instead of renting if it works out not too much more I may as well just put the rental money towards fixing what we have.

I stand by my statement that they are awful, they sound terrible compared with a wired 58. I had mine from brand new and it was looked after (until the receiver smoked).
Suitable (and far better) alternative would be an old original Sennheiser eW135 / eW145 / eW165, you can pick them up second hand for around about £150 a bit more for the better capsules (the 165 which is the condenser capsule is worth every penny, but I wouldn't want an MC anywhere near it!). If you only need 4 or less radio systems working at the same time then you could go VHF for a lot less money the old marcad diversity Shure receivers sounded much better than the PGX series and the radios were on par. |
