watch out for old BSS and Drawmer kit..... pin 3 hot or unbalanced!!!

Get those phase reverse cables out !

And DJM 600s, or at least my one is pin 3 hot. 

I thought there was a standard for insert cables, always rememberd it as Ring = Return = Red cable they all bigin with "R".  Or rememberd it as tip is left / mono, as on a 2 way jack the tip has to be signal, so on a 3 way jack the tip is still left or hot if its for ballanced.

But it seems others do it differently, wich is nice and confusing of them.

The confusion comes from un-balanced insert points on desks - pretty sure Sound craft have 'swapped' their standard over the years and A&H is different to say a Midas Venice. You don't get this on the big boy boards - except midas with TT jacks for the XL3.
 
Oh and if you want confusion give a cadac board to a novice - all the pots start at 1 o'clock and finish at 11 o'clock!
