...what are the 78XX rated at? and what is it powering?.... i ask as i HAVE build somethis imilar and i had 2amp 78XX chips and they got nice and hot wen "driven" hard.

Have built many PSUs of the type in your circuit diagram.

You should add load resistors to the outputs of each of the Regulator IC's.
Have another look at the IC Datasheets in the applications and test circuit sections. This guarantees a minimum current at the IC output.
Next is to add suitable diodes to prevent reverse biasing the ICs when powering down.
Also a good idea to have a LED for each output to easily see if you get a fault condition

that won't work either.

You've got 2 diodes the wrong way round. In the pic your mains transformer will lead a rather warm, if short, life.

Clue: a bridge rectifier will have 4 connections. Yours has only 3

2 diodes diodes wrong connected, oversaw that.
