Steve, I never mentioned the 4x3" because it needs two of them to do justice to the output of a Q12. However it does also make it scalable in that they can be used in a 2.1 system. With the use of the new ferrite version of the original drivers it also make it a very economic box especially considering the performance. ![]() ![]() Tony Edited by Tony Wilkes - 19 August 2012 at 9:04am |

steve_B ===== Trust me, I know you joking!
Tony's reputation on here is extremely well earned - I've already checked out about everything he does with these compact systems.... I did wonder about the 4 *3's but the single 8 +cd just appeals (but want the best combination possible... ) I also thought the 8's would double up better than the 4*3's when I later add an extra set of Q12's _djk_ I did think about 10's when looking for the compact subs but Tony's Q12's seem the business so thats's the route I am taking there...... As far as MT's are concerned I wanted to keep compact and again the look of Tony W's 8 + 1"cd looks the biz - - also read great reviews on here from various sources regarding how good his Q12 + compact MT's systems are George C |

George, I’d definitely listen to them first. The big
advantage of the 4 by 3” is the simplicity of the set up. Tony and myself had
discussed this type of design because my wife had been threatening to do some
gigs on her own. I was looking at systems for her that were light, simple to
set up (active crossovers and amp racks need not apply), and would reinforce
voice and acoustic guitar. 100dB @ 1m would be more than adequate. The gigs
never materialised, so I never pursued the idea beyond “something like this
might work”. Tony did, and the next thing I knew he was bringing the prototype
round to test with my sub. I think it exceeded both our expectations. That said, a more conventional design might be better suited
to what you need. You need to decide exactly what aspects of the
design/performance are important to you and which aspects can be compromised. If you are arranging to audition the 4 by 3” with Tony, if
it is convenient I can let you listen to the BMS coaxes too. The picture below gives a comparison of the box sizes I use.
Left to right, Eminence 10” coax, RCF 10” with B&C 250 on tractrix horn, PD
8” with BMS 4524 on oblate spheroid horn, 8” BMS coax.

Steve_B so to summarise.....To steve, all decisions made re Q's based on gut reactions rather than anything scientific ![]() Love the look of the Q43's and may use to go back doing DJ work after all these years... Like the idea of 8" +cd for doing indoor band PA system using Multi Q12's + MTs to suit ... So my feelings are that if I go along the lines of Q12 ==== Q43's and Q8 (is there a Q8???) if not I am sure there soon will be, then I will have a very versatile system, compact enough for my needs and yet suitable for any gig i find myself doing..... As an aside I would love to hear before I build but what the hell! take a chance == feels right, I understand that Tony is in the W Mids somewhere, but where are you - I am Norfolk but distance doesn't usually bother me (--ish) Many thanks for interest and input George C ![]() |

About 15 mins from Tony if the M6 is clear. Whichever of these systems you end up choosing, they will sound better than the typical 12/15" Peavey, Wharfdale, Soundlab, type of disco speaker. Just because a system is physically small doesn't mean it shouldn't lack quality, clarity and punch.
