Hey guys, I've got a little project on the go to fit a very compact low powered hifi type setup into a smallish box to mount on a bike.
I've ordered and returned 3 cheap amps now that seemed to fit the bill but either didn't have the proper crossover capabilities or just sounded rubbish. I'm going to have two full range speakers that are mounted in the box and a sub module that travels in the box then can be removed and placed on the floor when the system's in use. I don't need huge power (3x 40-50w rms) but I'm struggling to find a decent sounding amp that can do what I want. I need two full range outputs and one sub output (so either crossover on board or LP filter around 150-200hz) preferably with sub sonic filter. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075MD198W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 That was my latest fail, waaaay too much distortion and shonky crossover. But something that sort of physical size that's actually of a decent quality is what I'm after. Thanks for any input! Edited by wayward native - 23 May 2019 at 8:19pm |

There are loads of car amplifiers that do 2.1
As
the majority of 4 channel car amplifiers can be used with pairs of
channels bridged into a single speaker. Its just a matter of finding one
that has the right filter options for you. A quick search came up with the Pioneer GM-A4704 for instance. This nearly fits your requirements but has a fixed low pass filter frequency at 80Hz.

I believe the gm-d8604 will fit nicely for what youre looking for. It's a very popular amp for 12v systems. 4 channels with flexible bridging options. (Meaning, it can do 2.1) LPF/HPF 40-500hz
https://www.pioneer-car.eu/se/en/products/gm-d8604 I have one myself and can highly recommend it! I run it mono bridged with a BFM Omni tallboy 15 horn loaded 3 way speaker @ 8ohm (https://billfitzmaurice.info/Omni15.html) Measured the power consumption today as well: running hi/mid on one channel and bass on a separate one; max volume with techno playing drains about ~4A on average.
The whole package is mounted on a bike carriage (https://imgur.com/a/lSM8Zk5) together with a 60Ah Lifepo4 battery. It's easily loud enough for outdoor usage for ~100 people. |

I went for this in the end: https://www.jbl.com/stage-amplifiers/JBL+STAGE+A6004.html?cgid=stage-amplifiers&dwvar_JBL%20STAGE%20A6004_color=Black-GLOBAL-Current#start=1
Don't need too much power as have to keep everything very small to fit on the bike (no drivers are larger than 6"). It's all got to fit on a rack on the back of a 20" wheel ex hungarian postmans bike! So gonna have everything in one box, mid highs in a sealed enclosure to the side then another compartment with removable lid for the amp the battery and a vented sub cabinet that will be removed and placed on the floor. I'm actually going to build two subs and then one can be taken in a backpack if needed. Not going to be mega loud (definitely not 100 people loud!) but should sound good and run for a while. Using a 20ah LiOn battery and will probably buy a second one to swap out if more juice is needed. If I used a larger battery I just couldn't fit it all in the box. |

Looks great! Not sure about the saddle setup though, hows it ride? Would have thought it try to lift up too easily?

looks great, i would also include an isolator switch at the battery or at least a fuse.

Bit weird to ride! Alright once you get a bit of momentum up. The saddle is just twisted round to make a bit more room on the box for a laptop/turntable and the box is bolted to the rack from underneath. I thought about an isolator switch but every component is fused and there's an on/off switch for the whole lot so I wasn't sure it was necessary?
