Just made up a 16a Ceeform plug > Permaplug 13a 4 way with 1.5mm H07 and it was a fairly snug fit into the cable entry on the Permaplug 4 way; I know 2.5mm would be preferable, will 2.5mm H07 really fit in there?

I managed 2.5 into a 2-way 13A-use permaplug a few years ago. But that was to ensure compliant earth loop impedance on the run.

It does fit, we have 80 x 16a T lines to 4 way Permaplugs with 2.5 H07, but like you say, it’s snug!

Ferrules are your friends in these situations

Thanks.

Thanks James, I meant the flex entry to the body of the Permaplug 4 way looks tight for 2.5mm H07 - the terminals look like they will accept 2.5mm ok, but I'll use ferrules anyway.

we ferrule every mains connection, simply a better solution. however I was under the impression that stuffing cable larger than the connector was designed for was a PAT fail - and that 13A should be a maximum of 1.5mm ( and nominally 1.25mm).

Given that 1.5mm is more than adequate for 16A over a shortish distance what is the reason people feel the need to try and fit 2.5mm cable into 13A plugs and sockets?

It's a 5m 16a ceeform plug to fused 13a 4 way socket. My first thought was to use 1.5mm then I trawled through a few discussions on the topic on here and most people seemed to have gone with 2.5mm cable so started to question myself.

1.5mm would be perfectly adequate at 16A, if your socket is fused at 13A across all sockets, then 1.25mm would be adequate!

My preferred set up would be:

5m long 16A cable on 2.5mm
16A to fused 13A 4way on short 1.5mm

More versatile, avoids a 5m coil of cable when your 16A supply is near
Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.

Sounds good for general purpose cables. This cable is for a specific home use purpose (outside power for working in the yard), so extra connections would be overcomplicating things I think.

I don't really like the 16A to 13A four way at all though (4 way will be marked 'max supply 13A' so technically a PAT fail)

I stock the single 16 to single 13A adapters and these

Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.

These are the adapter I prefer

One of these at the wall socket, Standard 13a four way extension cable.

30mARCD at wall if there isn't one over the 16A supply already
Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.
