A P.A hire specialist I talk to now and then (also bit of a
PA snob cos he's been using labgruppen/crest/Nex/KV2/Martin/rane
for donkey's years and considers crown old hat) tells me if I'm
interested in scoops, he has plans for a 2x18" scoop/reflex hybrid.
He says this wee beasty properly eats all scoops (SPL & bass depth), and won't give me the plans, but his box builder can do me a pair for £600 unloaded. Yeah, well out of order, but he is not a man to exaggerate, as I heard of his firm & their rigs reputation before meeting him. Was hoping someone else heard of these plans and had comments... |

People who claim magicals things, remind me of bose. Nothing beats horns. Hybrids can achieve almost horn like qualities, but they arent fully horns are they. The hybrid probably distorts more so it sounds louder |

Imagine the size of a 2x 18 inch scoop hybrid thing. And anyway for that size 2x labhorns would beat it!!! |

The EV MTL-1X is a 2x18 scoop/reflex hybrid (they call it SubScoop),
probably derived from combining a couple of EV T18s into 1 cab. The
live music venue where I work on a regular basis has a pair each side
and they're monsters. Very efficient, long throw and seem to cope with
most types of music. The Crown MA-2400 driving all 4 is barely ticking
over.

The asymmetrical alignment allows one to improve the phase cancellation
issues of a scoop to some extent, though it is a very tricky design to
get right and it has its limits (as all things)
I can post a plan pic up from home (photo of a design drawing) Edited by Timber_MG |

@Toxic I don't think it would be an old fashioned side by side arrangement
Tox', remember he's a snobbish PA GUY, so what ever he's trying to flog
would also have to look the part. I guess it would be something kinda the shape and size of a scoop
(tall, approx 24 across the front, probably size of the EV MTL-1X that
Wrighty mentioned. @Wrighty: Would you say those EV's dropped 35 - 40 easily ? Sounds promising, but exposed drivers is a bit concerning..... |

I'm not sure if the EVs would go that low. Quoted response is 50-160Hz
and they do drop away VERY sharply below 50Hz. Not sure how the
response changes when you use them in multiples though. What are you
intending to play through these things?

Rnb,Hip Hop,DanceHall, all which require 35-120hz range you get from 2x18 reflex, but with scoop SPL and mid throw ability (in medium size halls anyway), so might as well stick with two well endowed scoops aside then... Has anyone seen this link / heard these "new" CV boxes? JE-36B on ebay Do they really drop below 40hz in singles a side? Are they any better than "da Looney"? Every one tells these CV horns only produce 40hz depth in when in quantity, in which case, I'll just use scoops for mid size hall, and "da Looney" for ALL else. |

All the folded horns are just different, not one is necessarily better. No one wastes space anymore,we all use cad, programs, and its all pretty much optimal. The folding hasnt changed in decades, the driver has improved though, probably increased power handlign and excursion four fold. The response from one in a corner could approach 40hz. DJK once posted on audioasylum, some old CV document showing how 4 or more were required to achieve the stated response.

one 2 x 18" hybrid sub that seems to have been passed by in this
conversation is the ohm trs 218. only after looking at the following link have i gained any idea about what goes on inside them, ohm always used to show a sealed box in their publicity shots. trs 218. anyway, they are good for 136 dB and sound really tight and together, best bit is, they are smaller than a scoop bin! fussion julz has some of these also and reckons they are pretty good. james. |
