Been given machine with Socket 1156 i3-540 chip, but if it's gonna replace my sturdy Q6600 Socket 775 machine, new box needs to outperform my old by at least 50%. Especially as Linux + Quad core is smooth.
I'm not leading edge Cpu fanbois, so never spend more than £60 on used cpu upgrade. Have seen i5-750 for £60, wondering it that is the ticket, or if some obscure i7 for similar price is best. |

look for a "k" stepping cpu... like an i5-2500K (but not that one) for either the i5 or i7 as these will let you nudge up the clock speed your self and get a little more bang for your buck, so to speak.
