I managed to get some time to do a little prototype of a 8"+1" cab.
Im quite pleased with the results, want to do a few tweaks tho. I gave it quick smaarting, to see when its at and as a reference for post tweaking measurements.

Very cute!
I assume its the prototype as even little 18mm MDF boxes weigh a bloody ton! what drivers are we using in this project? And are we gonna try for a passive in them so you wont need to bi-amp? |

Indeed used MDF as it the prototype but planning on using 18mm ply for the finished units.
I've used a Fane sovereign 8 225 and a BMS 4524 on a Faital STH100. Indeed also planning on a passive and maybe a 12" sub to sit under them.

For a little box, you'd probably be ok with 15mm - unless of course you have some 18mm knocking about - with smaller panels and less stresses from the drivers, your back will thank you for it one day :) |

I do have enough 18mm lingering about to make 4 of them. It weights 10kg at present but also like the idea of over engineering them bit tho.

Give it a go. I've done the cab to suite the driver and the passive crossover will also be suited to the cab and driver combo.

After a bit of listening I though the sound was bit looser/slower that I'd like.
To tighten the sound I cut the port down to tune it a little higher and added more dampening. It lost a few Hz of low end but resulted in quicker/punchier sound to my ears. Gave it another quick smaart so see where its at. Red=8", Yellow=1", Blue= resultant (Green=previous resultant) For the passive crossover I'm starting to think of doing a simple crossover and use DSP to optimise the enclosure (in a next style) |
