I did replace the probes on my cheapo multi some time back. When I work on gear with HV rails I set them up on crocodile clips or similar before I energise the kit under test and then leave it the hell alone until i have finished doing whatever is on the cards. The display serves as a useful warning not to do anything dumb.

I've not done any testing on powered up high voltage stuff yet. I will be when I build the Mullard 3-3 though as I'll need to check voltages going to each valve socket. Might get some help from a friend to test the valves/my work and power up on a variac just to be safe as I'm no expert

Variacs are good... As is current limiting. Valve circuits are actually very simple and easy to work with, as long as you follow a very simple and basic set of safety rules. Eye protection on power up is a good idea for any device too.

Back in the day we used a hell of a lot of 800B amps along with the odd 800C---The great thing about them was being able to fit three of them in a standard 12U rack and still be able to lift it.
The only negative point about them was that they were crap on bass so we tended to use them on mid up and also monitors and our bass amps were all Yamaha P2200 series. When Studiomaster brought out the Mosfet 1000 we also had a load of them as well and all models were ultra reliable amps--a lot better than the Crown DC300A and Phase Linears that we had been used to. |

might have to sell one of the amps to finance the cost of a replacement switch for the other!
