HI, im new here and this is my first post!

Im from France (south-west) and just started a Reggae/dub sound system.

I got 4 scoops equiped with PD1850 - 800W /8ohm each.

Til now i was driving them with a T.amp Proline 3000 (2x1500W / 4ohm) - 2xPD.1850 // on each channel (= 1600W / 4ohm).

Now my budget looks nicer and im looking into better amps.

Here is what my investigations have led to:

Expensive but high end amps:

  • CROWN VZ 5000 - 2x2000W / 4ohm - 1400euros second hand
  • CREST AUDIO PRO 9001 - 2 x 2200w sous 4ohm -  1500euros second hand
  • ELECTROVOICE P3000 - 2 x 1300 W / 4Ohm -  1300euros second hand. From what i have been told, running my 2 PD.1850 at 1300W would still make them sound and would save them from extensive use, so someone advised me this amp which apperntly is very high quality. What do you think?

More affordable but still good amps:
  • QSC RMX 5050 2x 1600watts/4ohms - 1400euros new
  • Crest Audio CC 1800 - 1800W / 4 ohms BRIDGED -> I'd need two of those. 600euros new each.
  • Peavey CS-4080 HZ - 2x 2040 W / 4 Ohm 900euros new and this would be my favourite choice for now (best quality/price ratio i found).
Any feedback would be appreciated to help me make my choice!!!

Peace

Crest 9001 or Crown 5000VZ, my advice.

Crest a little bigger power, but better Crown for IOC comparator (monitors and displays distortion >0.05% before clipping)

I dont run the Proline 3000 bridge, just 2 scoops in // on each channel of the amp... dont know if i understood right (im french!!! Wink)

I've thought about buying another Proline 3000 to drive each scoop /8ohm, i could then throw 1100W in each of them... I dont think its really good for them but i could try :-P

But really I'd rather have one powerfull amp for all 4 scoops than 2 Proline (= over 70kg!!!!).

paulus is suggesting that you DO bridge your Proline 3000 into 2 scoops, get another one to run the second two scoops.

This will give you 1800W per driver. Too much? Depends on program material, but I'd hazard a guess that the PD1850's could take it as long as you feed them a clean signal (no clipping!). With heavy dub maybe don't turn them up all the way - Paulus is the man to ask though!

You should probably consider also the Void Infinite 8 mk2, 2400W at 4 ohms per channel, would be a good match for your kit.

To nomis: I now live in Lyon, but my sound is based in Urrugne, bask country... Just at the south of Saint Jean de Luz Big smile

to colinmono and Paulus: My Proline 3000 BRIDGED gives 3000W at 8ohm, wait too much for two sccops!!! Or did I not understand what you meant again?

Can you explain to me what head room is btw?

Thanks!

If the signal is clean, the PD1850 can take an insane amount of power in the 1850 horn before reaching its limit.

Bear in mind the above is in a different cabinet but still.... (you probably need to have a good high pass filter in place to prevent driver unloading in scoops?? I'm not a scoop expert so...) but you would be surprised what an 1850 can take when fed with a CLEAN signal.

Paulus/Colinmono speaketh the truth.

If you can stand the weight, 2x bridged Proline 3000, driving 2x 8 ohm PD1850s per amp, will easily outperform CA18/5000VZ/Nathon driving 2x drivers per channel, and probably remain very cool to the touch.

However, your limiter/protection setup must be immaculate and very precisely set.
