I just had a phone call from these people:-

They were trying to tell me that my computer was "downloading viruses" apparently they could tell this from my ip address?????

As far as I'm aware I don't have any problems so I didn't go along with anything. Can anyone shed any light
If it's got wheels or tits it's gonna cost a fortune

Its a scam - they'll want your card details in order to take payment for 'remotely fixing your pc'.

+1 on the scam, well known in IT circles as such!

Also a reverse DNS lookup of their website link IP address you have given goes to a non-existent Server so is definitely very dodgy!

Result from Telnet:
telnet 209.25.221.44
Trying 209.25.221.44...
telnet: connect to address 209.25.221.44: Connection refused

From a Whois lookup, it links to host44.maxim.net in the USA:
# telnet host44.maxim.net
telnet: host44.maxim.net: Name or service not known

you have been warned!

Mik

Edit: add Reverse DNS/telnet info

I suspected as much. Did manage to keep them on the phone for 12 minutes so I reckon I cost them a quid or so.

Nah - will have cost em no more than a couple of cents. Very very cheap VOIP.

But I reckon a good one to wind em up would be to pretend you're a bit deaf (and mebbe a bit errr ... thick) ..... get em to repeat their "instructions" a few times - should convince em they've got one on the hook. Then - if it amuses you - string em along for quite some time. After a while just "change your mind".

Yeah you're right really ....

Once upon a time, having time on my hands, I did similar once to the one of the bods calling from India trying to sell/scam "free" mobile phones.
I obviously got under his thick skin a fair bit, as I got a couple of quite abusive calls later that day :-)
