For the people with limited budget. Some of them haven't even seen SSD technology.

Had a 128gb SSD drive lying around in living room. For a giggle, transferred my Ubuntu system partition to the SSD, and replaced disks. No longer need to upgrade CPU in Ubuntu box, even though it's only a 1st gen i3, & I run Win 7 x32 VM on it regularly. Edited by levyte357- - 07 February 2014 at 1:20pm |

No they aren't. The hybrid performance doesn't compare, not that much difference from a regular drive. I installed one in a HTPC last weekend because why not? Boot times are still similar to a normal drive, about 3x as long as my main SSD equipped PC.

IIRC, some SSHDs utilise SSD component as write chache, where as large drives are basically 2x drives in one. If that's correct wouldn't it need 2x SATA connectors? Edited by levyte357- - 07 February 2014 at 4:04pm |

I imagine that whatever method is used the onboard controller would decide where to pull the data from and only a single S-ATA connection would be used. Otherwise you'd worse off than 2 separate drives and the redundancy that gives you. It's just a question of how much of the spinning disk is cached. Congrats on the longest post ever btw |

Hybrids are just an attempt at 'best of both worlds'. Regularly used files are held on the SSD with longer term high capacity storage on the spinning magnetic disc. You can do it in software with two drives but the performance should be somewhat better with the two closely coupled.
