Need some opinions on audio surge PROTECTORS. Are they any good. Been told to use specific high rate rfi emi surge protector for audio not a computer or p.c surge protector as these can add distortion to the line signal. Can anyone recommend what to use?

There are far greater variables to your sound in a PA system than what mains surge protector is being used. You’ll need the PERFECT room to tell the difference.

Your signal path has a much greater impact on your sound, than the mains supply does.
Keep resistance low, quality high - kit with a good S/N ratio, no unnecessary boxes in the chain. Then you need to look at speaker placement and time alignment.and EQ. Get all of that spot on then worry about mains filters. |

Both of those types are delusional. A surge protector has a sacrificial device in it that throws itself over the proverbial grenade(a big voltage spike) and just like what happens when somebody does that in real life there ain't no coming back from it or in other words.. this is a 1 time event and after that your special power bar no longer offers any surge protection. The difference is it will still pass electricity after such an event so the end user is none the wiser and continues along in his delusional belief that said device is providing protection and even improving sound in some case. If your rig includes any digital equipment then adding an AVR equipped UPS isn't a bad idea, that device will protect your gear from repeated over and under voltage events but don't bother looking for one for your amplifiers or powered speakers because it would have to very large and it's generally unnecessary for those devices, and don't expect it to change the sound in any way.. it won't. |
