Everyone has there own opinions..
Mostec and the latest JTS preamps do the job well.
JTS drop a lot of weight! Mostec seem good all round and are very customisable.
Plenty of sounds around using both so try and get to a dance and check them out!
Dont know about jored, neither heard or used one..very expensive but he apparently uses better "hifi" quality caps etc on discrete removable pcbs. This may be worth the extra im not sure.
Ive not heard ligwas new preamps..possibly buily by pepper?
All the above will do the job..there are some small differences in sound/features/layout.
There are a few other builders out there too.
I've heard about some new digital preamp designs emerging.
Baracudas were popular in the 70s/80s and are old school..harder to find these days. They use obsolete opamps/ ceramic caps and other components that are prob not considered hifi today.. but they have a certain character and sound. Some (most?) are built on one board so they can be tricky to work on..thats if you can find someone to service them.
There are people who love kane and links.Again tricky to find as they usually get passed between sound systems who often have a few preamps.
Having an old unavailable preamp has its charm. Some people just like to have old school "back in the day" things that other people cant buy..I wouldnt buy into that unless there is a real reason for getting a particular preamp. I would recommend to go for a new preamp if you want something reliable and easy to service but its a matter of personal taste. People look for different things in a preamp...some people like a certain sound, some like a lot of weight, some like clean hifi quality, some like a certain added characteristic. Many builders give you the option of customising layout/features..but they all basically do the same thing.

what is more important is the operator.Knowing the preamp well and having good ears and setting it right.
Knowing the tunes and adjusting it well, adjusting sweeps and kill switches at right time can add excitement.  Hope that helps.

Yeah...
After many phone calls and checking out all my sound system friends I manage to get hold of a Kane 6 way stereo pre amp..

That's right.. 6 way.
Bass
Mid Bass
Mids
Tops
Low Mids
Horns
all with independent  kill switch. 10 band graphic eq, bass shift, tops shift, 2 mic, 4 inputs, 2 x send & return, sounds clean like a top brand hifi system, no hiss no rumble..
absolutely priceless...

Sounds like it doesn't have an overkill switch... LOL

As always, it'll be interesting to hear it being used. Let us know how you get on.

OK... Here it is as requested. This is not the original front panel.. This brushed aluminium is my own work...
The reason why the front panel is so big (9u) is to housed my DE200 Digital delay and Links siren,
Also knight rider chaser lights.
The blue LED lights and toggle switch are kills...
Paul (Kane) is very clever in the way he designed this pre amp.you can can use it as a straight full range(good when used as a home hifi) then just plug in the jacks for tops, it will split the signal and play 2 way, plug another in, it splits to 3 way and so on...
AWESOME

Paul don't build pre's anymore?? But Paul is a nice and honest guy. you ask nicely he will...

Once completed.. it will be a flight cased and be a stand alone pre amp..sitting nicely on the amp rack..
No other racks will be needed.. simple and quick. @ the rear, I have my spectrum  analyzer display, giving the punters something to focus on while the music do the talking...
