Hi,
I've just picked up a pair of mini scoops and am on the lookout for a pair of suitable drivers. I have an opportunity to buy either a pair of Void V18-1000s or a pair of B&C 18TBX100s. Both drivers are listed on the Free Speaker Plans spec sheet as being suitable drivers for the cabs but the Thiele Small parameters look to be very different. Could someone please advise me which would be the better option and give me some guidance about which TS parameters are most critical to consider for this kind of cab? I think they are Staiper MS-18 Mk1s. Thanks

Many would object to me being called the Scoop Guru !!! ![]() My driver suggestions for this cab, regardless of intended use, would be as follows: 1. 18sound 18NLW9601 2. PD 1851 3. Void V18-1000 (Budget Option) The 18sound and PD1851 will sound the warmest, effortlessly produce sublime lows, and have motor strength to stay in control, at high power input. The Void with it's huge sensitivity, will be easy to drive, will require more eq to hit lowest lows, but also very strong motor.

Would also add, To get optimum performance, use bass pre-amp, with boost freq sweep. Also, cheap, cack amp, without sufficient guts, will have you reconing drivers in no time. Don't listen to the Muppets, about getting Proline 3000, to drive 4x Rolls Royce drivers. Is great solid amp, but not enough power, for 4x 1K drivers. |

I was under the impression that the mk1 cab had driver excursion problems at certain frequency. Hence the mk2 and the mk3. I've actually got 4x mk1, I use them with very sensitive very old Cetec Gauss 18's for my valve amp to drive, they do drop very low, but with the power I drive them with, no excursion problems. However, I would have been reluctant to put big boy drivers in these particular cabs, I would have opted for the mk3's.

Thanks both for the replies.
I'm only ever likely to be running a pair of these scoops because I only cater for fairly small indoor events up to 200 people. I think both the 18Sound and PD drivers are likely to be out of my budget, at least in the short term, so the Void V18s look like being my best option. If I go down that route would it be problematic to run them in 4 Ohm Bridge using a Crown amplifier that outputs 3200W? Would that be 'sufficient guts' until such time as I source a more powerful amp or am I at significant risk of blowing the drivers if I go down that route? I use a DBX Driverack PA2. Is that capable of doing the boost freq sweep that you referred to and, if so, what frequencies would you recommend boosting and by how much? I appreciate that the B&C drivers wouldn't make your top 3 list Levyte but I have the opportunity to purchase an almost new pair at an attractive price. In your opinion would they perform reasonably well in MS-18s? (Sorry for all the questions)

If the amp is a macro tech, be extremely careful as that particular amp has a reputation of burning drivers at clip levels. The 5k not so much.

Couple more questions.....
I notice that the recommended drivers all tend to have Qts ratings of below 0.3. Is that the key TS parameter to be looking out for when assessing the suitability of drivers for this kind of cab? I bought the cabs with Fane 18XBs (the old 600W AES version) loaded in them. Am I best off just sticking with those drivers for now until I can afford something decent and overlooking the fact that they have such a modest power handling rating?

It's not a Macro Tech. The one I was considering using is an Xti4000 and I was hoping there would be sufficient headroom not to reach clip levels.

The xti 4000 is very very weak on bass. Definatly will need changing. I wouldnt upgrade the drivers until the amp has been changed.

The PD1851 was designed for large chamber Scoops, the first and only driver to be, the end. The 18sound is just the best 18" driver ever, when used in right Scoops. Turbomax Redeye is extremely strong but only works in certain Scoops. I have had 9601s, sold them, as they were too expensive, to have doing nothing. Went back to 1851s. After a long learning experience, I just don't have time for mediocre drivers, so for large chamber cabs, like the Staiper or Shorty mini, it is the 3x above only, IMHO. I've got an LD Systems SP1800 that I would normally use but one of the channels is a bit temperamental and that has put me off using it. I've also got a Studiomaster AX3500 that I could use in 4 Ohm bridge instead of the Crown amp. I appreciate neither are particularly great bass amps but when you are doing this as a hobby rather than a profession you sometimes have no choice but to upgrade your gear bit by bit over time.
I'm quite happy with my tops and mids and Powersoft amp I use to run those so just need to sort my subs and a solid bass amp now when my available funds will allow it.
