If anyone is interested, total for 12 skids is £23.29 including VAT & delivery. Compares to £42 on ebay.

Um, and in the real world where am I going to find enough lignum vitae to make long enough skids for less than the cost of all the plywood in the cabinet?  A couple of old lawn bowls halved would make beautiful feet, but still not cheap.

What hardwoods would be both suitable for floor skids and be both affordable and available outside specialist timberyards?

ahh you wouldn't for skids but a few feet, pick up bits cheap enough. hmm European ash is pretty hardy
