I've never set up at subwoofer in my life. have a Beyma 12LX60-V2 driver and an Onkyo AV receiver. Can I connect the driver to the receiver using speaker wire or RCA cable?

Maybe. If the AVR has a speaker output that can be configured to power a subwoofer then yes, but if it only has a line level RCA(phono) sub output you need a separate subwoofer amplifier.
What does the fine user manual say?

I'm trying to post pictures but there doesn't seem to be an option to do that.
I have an Onkyo HT-R380 AV receiver and the back has wiring especially for subwoofer and front speakers. I don't plan to get an enclosure for the Beyma driver so I guess I'll try getting copper speaker wire to connect the two....

That does have a speaker level output for sub. so connect with speaker wire directly. Most people use an enclosure for speakers, is there a reason for not doing so?

Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.

I’ll take bets on how long it is until we see a thread asking about ‘that funny smell’.

Driving a sub driver without an enclosure. is a bit like runiing a car without the wheels. It is not going to perform very well and its likely to destroy itself in a short time. IE if you are serious, you are going to need some kind of enclosure for the driver.

Open baffle speakers seem to be a trend in some home audio circles. I don't get it but maybe it's all about the ambience created by the reflected energy. I like subs that knock pictures off the walls but to each thier own.

Open Baffle can work for bass but for sub use it would need to be a massive panel.
40hz wavelength is 8.5 metres- A bare 12 driver just cancels out low frequency output.
