Hi all,

Booted my PC up earlier after it had been off power for a couple of days. As soon as I put power to it from the socket it booted up that the system date/time settings were incorrect, so I reset them and the system booted fine. Runs fine afterwoods too.

Read this is the first symptoms of the CMOS battery dying on the motherboard, I've been looking into a new battery, is the standard type of battery for mobos the CR2032? I will buy some if so and put it in to replenish it. Thought I'd check here first as you all know what your talking about.

Its an Asrock board btw, if it makes any difference. Thanks in advance for your help, I will be sure to "thank" anyone who helps sort me out

CR2032 is what you want.

Common enough for these batteries to need to be replaced, I wouldn't be worried about it at all.

Not a good idea to buy and store a number of these batteries, the self discharge rate is not much different to the discharge rate of an installed one!

Be careful removing/installing them as the battery holders aren't very robust and replacing a holder is a PITA

Thanks guys. Maybe Ill just buy the one then and put it in. Is it worth changing all the batterys of my desktops? Is the CR2032 an industry standard battery?

Thanks Mik, Ill change this one as soon as I get a battery. Will it do the PC any harm running it for a couple of days on a low bat before the new one comes? Ill fit it soon as I get it but I need the PC before then.

Also, is there anyway I can change the battery without any of my BIOS settings being altered? I've taken photos of every page in my BIOS of every setting, was just wondering if there was a way to be quick about it and save losing them. Thanks guys

Well, with a low BIOS Battery you lose your settings/Date and Time etc, but so long as you reset them on start-up then things should otherwise be OK.

The Hard disk should auto-detect OK and so long as your time/date is correct then you shouldn't get any file header errors.

Tis possible to replace the CMOS Backup Battery with the motherboard powered up, but you need to be very careful not to short out any of the exposed connections etc.....

Leaving your PC base unit powered up for an 'extended' period shouldn't cause any problems either.
Worth giving fans, heatsinks and the internals generally a good clean to remove any gunge/dust build-up whilst you have the cover off to change the battery.

Being a bit of a nerd, I replace CMOS batteries and clean my PC Base Units approximately once per year

Thanks Mik, Ill gladly take your advice. Just bought 2 duracell mobo batteries. Ill change both batteries in both my PCs while I'm at it. Afterall, I wouldn't put cheap batteries in an epxensive mic, so why put cheap batteries in an expensive Carillon PC?

As for dirt/dust etc, I'm a total gimp when it comes to that, my PC is absolutely spotless internally, I've always seen the batteries and thought "hmm should I change them?" But thought replacements would be hard to get hold of. Ill do both my PCs now. Thanks very much Mik

Come to think of it, my house desktop in the front room boots up and runs lovely, but I haven't seen it display the mobo/bios splash screen on boot for ages. It just switches on, goes to windows and runs. Any ideas as to why this happens? Could probs sort that too while I'm at it, its a quiet weekend this week for me so maybe I need to give my PCs some tlc, especially the Carillon

...lol. nerds unite!

i clean all pc's and laptops once every 3 months... a damn good vacuum and general clean up (hardware/software) and change the batteries as and when as they last a solid 3years and i tend to try to upgrade a little within 3yrs.

PUS/CPU/GPU all need a good vacuuming. dust and grime are like cancer to a pc... over heat it and it'll die.

2035 is the norm for pc batteries, they are pennies and yes the shelf life is as good as keeping them in a pc so buy as and wen.

Hi all,

Quick update, bought a pack of CR2032s, their life is until 2021 according to their boxes, had 3 come in the post I can only presume by accident, so ill change the battery in here every year for a littlewhile now just to be sure haha.

I changed the battery on the board and all is now good, apllied power to the PC and it didn't want to boot anything up by itself again so its back to normal. Panic avverted.

Thanks all for the quick helpful and detailed tips on what to do, appreciate it very much
