Right guys,

My set are sounding a little dead now (inf act one driver has died already)

All I have at the minute are some 15w jobbies, cost me about £15 off e bay.

Could you possibly link me to some nice sounding woofers and tweeters please!

Hardly massive PA I know

driven off a Poineer a-209R if that helps

I just built a pair of bigger than bookshelfs using Volt LS201s and Monacor DT-300s

The tweeters in particular will not break the bank and sound pretty good to me. You could do a lot worse. 4 flange mounting points is always nice too - 3 never seemed enough on large diameter flanges to really seal them. Although why tweeters do not come with an O-ring to seal the flange to a cabinet I don't know, cheap as you like and a great solution rather than mucking around with gasket tape.

But that's another story!

If not look through the Faital Pro 3,5,6,8" driver that you can get on lean-business.co.uk/.

Or get a second hand pair of studio mons if they are just for your room.

Absolutely - when I was 19 I picked up a mint pair of Mission 732 for £31 & they served me very well for 5+ years until I built myself a sub & decided to replace them with something smaller. You'll have to spend many times that amount to get something new that sounds as good or better.

Studio monitors aren't nice for casual listening. They're too analytic & 'boring'.

Depends on the monitors, that....mine sound totally lovely with everything I've tried so far. I prefer them to any "hi-fi". Flattest possible time response, that's the key.

Agreed. Words like "low distortion", "flat response", "minimal group delay" and "well behaved dispersion" mean a lot more to me than "too analytical" or "too boring".

lost eden - if I put a 'hifi' sticker on a 'studio monitor' speaker, what tests could you do to determine it's got the wrong label on it?

Your opinion, but for £200-300 you can get a pair of Yamaha HS80's that will be fairly flat down to 40Hz room size and positioning dependant. A set of 'Hi-Fi' speakers flat down to 40Hz (and really down to 40, not just some piece of JVC stereo claiming to be flat down to 16Hz with added subwoofer) you're talking PMC/Bang & Olusen kind of cash.

Anyway if you dont buy active speakers you'll need an amp (extra cost) and and a dsp unit (extra cost) or you have to make or buy (extra cost) a passive cross over, to build bedroom speakers will cost you as much as a second hand set on studio's. HS80 or simular are too loud in a normal sized room with precision and clarity that no ipod dock / hi-fi would be able to stand up to.

Really? You can't get hifi speakers flat to 40hz for under £200? Ermm. Though, if I'm picking a pair of speakers for personal use, low end extension ranks pretty low on priorities.

To me, hifi speakers sound more alive than equivalent studio monitors - and are often a hell of a lot more enjoyable to listen to!

But then again, I sometimes listen to music to enjoy it, not just to get out SMAART Tongue
