Does anybody know, if you can overpower a driver.

It is recommended that you power a driver with an amplifier that is double the watts of the drivers rms e.g. 1000w 8ohm driver powered by an amp does that 2000w at 8ohms.

Can you safely power that driver with an amp that does 4000w at 8ohms or will it break the driver? Does anybody know what happens?

the most you can theoretically get out of an amp is 1.41 times its rated power - that's putting out a square wave and assuming the power supply can keep up.

That very old video points out two things. Manufactures have a better understanding of power handling than the majority of users despite what they want to believe. Pyle Pro is classified by many as a cheap brand (Despite the company was founded nearly 70 years ago) yet still achieved its peak power (for a short duration) getting a sine wave signal in free air.

Surely if Pyle Pro can meet its power handling specifications, loudspeakers that are classed as higher quality brands will meet their power handling requirements as well.

You can expect that speaker would tolerate 2000 watts for a longer duration if it were sitting in a cabinet and getting a music signal than a sine wave signal residing in free air.

I Love it!!!! Over and over I recone woofers with burned voice coils. I have customers that drive their subwoofers at 1000s and 1000s of watts and can not understand why their woofers melted. One customer ran  Crown 5000s bridged into RCF loaded w-bins and boom on the first song of the show. 4 w-bins 4 Crowns melt down. He asked Me if he should get 10000 watt amps??>>????>><<<<////??? I love it!!!
