Hey guys, I'm running my X15s as an active system so I'm trying to get a lightweight amp for the compression drivers. Currently I'm using a Samson S2000 for the 15s and an old Altec for the 1". But the Altec is a heavy mofo! I'm guessing it weighs around 25kilos! WAY too heavy just for some compression drivers. I've bought 2x BMS 4552ND compression drivers for better clarity..
http://www.bmspro.info/index.php?show=item&usbid=10278&id=54364 So I'm looking for a (not too expensive) good lightweight amp to power them. I may be building another 2 X15s so it would need to power 4 x 1" compression drivers. Any ideas? I was contemplating in getting another samson amp, or a crown. |

Got a crown XTi1000 that I use on my comps. Works a treat. Think I paid about £360. Recommend you go to about 2-3x the rating of the drivers i.e. for two off 80w drivers per channel, then about 320-480 into 4 ohms.
Don't forget the BMS's are incredibly efficient so you may not need this much power. Tony Edited by Tony Wilkes - 01 November 2007 at 6:07pm |

I can recommend the Yamaha P series of lightweight amps which are excellent on highs from past experience with a P3500S.
They are around 12kg-15kg. P2500S gives 390w rms into 4 ohm per chan and is around £250. That model weighs 14kg. |

Cheers guys. Seems the lighter you want the amp to be, the more you have to pay. So now I have to decide how lazy I feel, n how often I'm gonna slug around my amp rack. I might wait to get more money and get the QSC @ 6kilos!! good all round specs to, or the xti looks pretty good two. Sweeeet! Thanks again.

Its all a question of tone on HF, and there is something very clean sounding about the new breed of QSC PLX2s, I like it, some may prefer a slightly different tone, but it certainly seems to outstrip my old QSC RMX series. This is all subjective of course and I cant comment on the others mentioned in this thread, but I dont think you can really go wrong with Crown, QSC or Yamaha

Chevin A500...
Or sack off the Samson too and buy one decent lightweight four channel amp... MC2 E4-75 or the Void Kryo V amp... Both weigh nothing and are designed to run bi amp cabs...
