Clap I admire his patience and effort on that one,  one of nasty chinese Crowns that. I think most repairers would have just aimed it into the skip.
Be seeing you.

His little chuckles did make me chuckle! Why bother with that one though?

Love the vintage "fake transistor tester" Let's give it 230v, yep, seems fine, ok, these are genuine!

Yup. The only way to do it. So many fakes floating around these days. Especially switching MOSFETs. Can't trust anything.  Cry

You're right there Earplug. I try not to buy any transistors off Ebay purely for that reason.

Edit, as has been shown by Em pro with some of his 'can-opener' photos in the past, what's inside a TO3 has very little relation to what's stamped on the outside.

Aye, but unfortunately I'm not too well served here for electronic component shops, so have to resort to the 'bay, or pay silly surcharges for Digikey, Farnell, Mouser, etc.

Good thing is that making a claim for faulty components there is usually simple & quick. You just got to spread your bets - or stick to one or 2 reliable suppliers. I do have a couple bookmarked, so usually use them, but always test, test, test. Only way to avoid tears.
