I have some new DAT tapes (16)  that have been near a chassis speaker. Will they have been affected in any way????

They could be, depending on how near and how powerful the magnet. Only way to find out is to try if they are still playing properly.

I read that a bit too quickly but if they are brand new and never recorded on, then there should be no problem. The tape goes past the erase head on the recorder when making a recording anyway.

I've never actually used a DAT. They came with a DAT recorder............ which was advertised as a CD recorder. I never bothered to return it thinking "It might be useful for something" but many years on it remains unused.

So even though it's digital it still works magnetically as did the old C60 cassettes?

I think a comparison with a video tape would be more accurate in that they use a rotary head drum. Can't see a problem being near a magnet if they're blank anyway. Bulk tape erasers subject tapes to huge magnetic fields to wipe them in one go before re-use.
