I've got an old Speedway fairground ride that I take to local NW vintage and steam fairs and I've got an old Cloud Windsor deck which is hung on bungee cords from the paybox roof. I occasionally play vinyl and use the decks for microphone, mix and amp as the mixer has a good voice over function.

I've just replaced the old plastic decks with some Garrard SP25 mk3 as they're a bit more substantial. The old set up look the part and always get comments. They also sound great as well, with a bit of rock n roll or glam rock playing (well I think so anyway) Smile

Anybody else remember the disco decks and record players of the fairs of the 60's and 70's?

I remember a Pat Collins fair that used to visit on some ground near to where I lived. There was a guy on one of the rides with a Soundout console with red end cheeks. They were a pretty smart kit in their day and I always remember the chap who used it had a good vocal style.

Certainly pulled the punters in!

it's all just cardboard and magnets really

Weren't they the ones that spent more time being repaired than they did being used to DJ?

Funny you should mention that track, check out this video of our ride playing a bit of Northern Soul including that song last year.

Who built those big black vinyl covered showman's speakers that they all seemed to have, usually with a Fane cresendo 18" and an HF horn inside?
Be seeing you.

Sounds like the "Carlsboro" speakers made for Showman James Mellors, as his "Showman" Range.

What a great idea for a topic would be good to see some pics  of fairground sound systems
The equipment really takes a pounding  and is usually run for many hours at high level so has to be good and reliable

Here's a pic of my old decks hung on bungees from the ceiling in the paybox. I had them running through an old Peavey PA amp and 4 Peavey speakers hung round the inside of the ride. It's only 150w, but loud enough and I like the old school look.
