And of course the alternative is something like this, so count your blessings!

Is that our American cousins, my guess from white coloured conductor? Funnily enough, the Yanks have been using AFDD for ages, but their main safety feature is 110V, which is perceived as being safer. In dry conditions, blah, blah. American regs do feature some nice stuff, all cables for install tend to be singles that are preinstalled in metal adaptaflex. Gives a fair level of mechnical protection, but most US houses are wooden structures, so nails and similar, are likely. Again, given the high prevalence of wooden structures, AFDD are critical to fire prevention, hence they are common. However, for anything more than a light circuit, or phone charger, US regs all break down, biphase (bridged mains power effectively!) for anything significant like cookers or Air-Con. And then conductor CSA goes nuts because of current capacity requirements. And then those fecking socket outlets are junk. EU schuko socket outlets are not much better. 16A MCB doing 2.5 radial to your bed-side light. Bed-side light has 0.75mm flex, and no fuse in change down of CSA. I know we can do a 0.75mm lead set up to 2m, with a 13A plug top fuse, but at least we have a smaller fuse in place at change down of supply CSA. And your free to down rate that fuse to anything smaller, if it makes you sleep easier. "Where manufacturer’s flex is less than 2m in length, has a csa of 0.75mm2 and is fitted with a non-rewirable plug, it may be rated at 10A and be fused to 13A, in accordance with BS1363 Table 2 note C." - IET Code of Practice, Page 133. BS1363 UK socket outlets are genius (with the exception of above). Ring mains, much as they look to being deprecated eventually, are genius. Global RCD/split load board were a fudge to get RCD protection domestically, without costing silly money, smart enough. Now RCBO are cheap enough, you do RCBO per circuit. AFDD will be useful in wooden houses, which seem to be more prevalent recently, and even in Dimmers used in Old (wooden) theatres and venues of an age. As they get used in quantity, price will reduce, much as RCBOs have done. |

And.... we have just put out 4032 metres of flex over a1500 metre route to over 250 individual fixtures and art installations for an outdoor festival of light using much the same technique rcbo city. Any drop outs have been localised to small sub groups which given the extreme weather of the last fortnight torrential rain and 50k winds has shown how robust a well specified electrical distribution system can be. Likewise, having done hairdresser competitions where the prep hall pulled more power than the stage setup, proper planning, inspection (every hairdryer and curling tongs pat checked and plugs removed from failures, and a free new hairdryer/tongs to the competitor - ghd were running the comp) and testing with a robustly designed distribution system is the order of the day.
Looking good Ford, did Haydn sort you out in the end?

“New 18th edition Electrical Wiring Regulations introduced in January 2019 state that all RCDs, MCBs and RCBOs in a power distribution board now have to be the same brand - you can no longer have a mixture of different branded trips” This is quoted from a Essential Supplies email I just recieved. It seems a bit unecessary if correct - if two devices are correct for the job why shouldnt they sit next to each other in the same box (presumably I am allowed to join two distros together from different brands so what is the difference?) is it just to make an inspection easier? |

It may be borne from permanent installations where for example a Wylex MCB may squeeze into an MK board - but not line up 100% on the busbar- it works but it’s not right and may cause issues down the line.
