Hi i want to build 2 DJ Monitors for use in a nightclub. I was just wondering on any recomendations for the type of enclosure and driver to use.

i think 12" drivers are adequate, and a normall sealed or vented enclosure is best, but im not sure what drivers are best to use, as i presume the best monitors have a flat response using only 1 driver and a mid/high compression driver.

any info appreciated.

You can build or you can get an inexpensive powered speaker eg. tapco or behringer.

why don't you consider a dipole set up as shown in this link.

This system is small and easy to build and haul. The dipole radiation pattern will be of use with a DJ set up and the pattern will allow you to focus level on your dance floor.

Our main critria for dj monitors was to build a cab that has to be turned down. Either 15+1 or 12+1 passive . I learnt in the '80's that to make a dj behave himself or herself we would give them good level in the cans and a monitor that was too loud. Nothing elaborate needed. Just a good strong box with a flat response.

our deejays often ask to put the djbooth in the front of the stacks.
it's an essential sort of russian economy:)

A perfectly flat response is not necessarily essential.  The ear is very good at compensating itself.  For DJ monitors I'd more be wanting something very loud and indestructible.  If you build them to have a slightly more aggressive sound they will be subjectively louder, that and DJ's will have probably lost half the top end of their hearing anyway!

If they're for a small booth I'd say a 12"+1" combo but a 15"+1.4" box might be a better plan.

Either way you'll want a vented box but it doesn't need to be tuned low.  You don't need anything below 60-80Hz in a DJ monitor unless they're a long way from the system.

Here's one of our standard DJ monitors. 15 plus a 2. 600 watts bass, 80 watts top. Passive and easy to build.

imo you want something with a narrow dispersion so that all the sound is going directly into their ears

You can also consider delaying the monitor so that it is in time with whats happening out front. This might seem a bit extreme, But coherence is important. It just depends on how good you want things to be.

Laser measures are fantastic for setting delays.  Failing that a long tape measure!  You just need to know the difference between the distance from the listening position to the difference sound sources.
