Hi all. You sound like a friendly bunch so I thought I’d register and run some questions and ideas by you about a little project I’m undertaking. I’ve been challenged to build a half decent PA system suitable for a 200 person pub venue at super low cost yet with half decent performance. I’ve decided to make it a labour of love and build it ground-up from scratch. Thereafter, I may keep & hire it or sell it to the pub at materials cost, oh, and a bit of ‘bar credit’. My electronics skills are excellent. My speaker cabinet knowledge and construction skills are pretty close to zilch! Though I am practical, methodical and very meticulous… so I should win through! Anyway… For the bass speakers, after much research, I’ve plumped for Staiper’s Mini-Scoopers MS-18’s MkIII as shown here: http://forum.speakerplans.com/staiper-mini-scooper-18v2_topic33438 - http://forum.speakerplans.com/staiper-mini-scooper-18v2_topic33438 Primarily because they’re relatively easy to build and seem well acclaimed by people who have built them. There are other lesser reasons too. However…. I plan a 4 ohm system using two low-cost 8 ohm 18” drivers in parallel and would therefore need 4 MS-18’s, or do I? To save cost, how would a double-width MS-18 work? Essentially two, side by side, without any side panels between them, similar in principle to JBL 4520’s but simpler to construct. Or is a separating wall/panel between each side (and hence between each driver) absolutely necessary? I await your views with interest. Again, to save cost, I’m planning to use 18mm MDF. I can get all the MDF material professionally cut to size (excluding the edge bevelling) for about £65 per bin (as per the original MkIII cutting list). Is this reasonable or should I be shopping around? A double-width bin will be considerably cheaper than 2 single bins. Comments again welcome. Thanks in advance. double width?.... moving them around would be a pain in the A.S.S.
MDF is also a damn sight heavier then ply (but a damn sight cheaper!) so they scoops will be REALLY REALLY heavy once done. so hiring them out afterwards would prove "interesting" to say the least. but... and there is a but.... if you charge them and let them keep it as an install, weight and size wouldnt be a problem... and would be a bigger surface for underage drinkers to dance on (after a few shandys)..... just my two pence.... |

Re kickstart this thread :p what about if two mini scoops mouth to mouth but in one cabinet? Instead of two? with two pd1850 in.. I know weight would be issue.but any other issues would happen?. mouth to mouth increases db slightly...

This is not the mad 1970s, double Scoops are absolutely terrible idea.
Got to be realistic, if budget not sufficient, job won't be done properly. MDF cabs in a pub.. Hmmm... Maybe think this one through a bit more. |

"Low cost 18 " drivers"...
There are enough poorly assembled systems in the world. Personally think the cheapest drivers you should be considering, are used Fane 18XBs. "Speaker cab/construction skills zilch", Buy used ply cabs then. Edited by levyte357- - 01 January 2017 at 2:33pm |

I was saying about a double mini scoop built mouth to mouth, not side by side. loaded with pd1850. That should be heavy.

No point building a double scoop unless its going into an install. Too big, too deep, too heavy to load in and out of venues. The only double cabinet I would build would be a high power double reflex or manifold boxes

Yep, would need cutout widening though... Would also suit: 18sound 18LW2400, PD186 Series 1, Wembley Bline 18-800, Turbomax 1000, Oberton 18xb1600, |

Buy used, buy singles.
Plenty MDF survived in pubs, put rubber feet on cabs and seal well. But, hey it's a DIY forum, buy some wood, make mistakes, buy some more, learn, get tools. If you don't. or people don't, then the only cab builders will be CNC machines. Budget drivers? Not in scoops, but used goodies from 120 quid. |
