These events have become unanimous with Sheffield, transforming venues across the city with colour, noise and good vibes. These events are more than just music nights, they embody a whole scene, culture and community, making it the definitive dub/reggae event in Sheffield. Dubcentral has a distinctive feel like nothing else in the city. Every month, roots music from the world over cascades through a heart-poundingly loud sound system, as some of the country’s finest DJs take to the decks. Live MCs and brass instrumentalists direct the show as the room bounces all night, joined by a shared love of the music, pausing only to sip on cans of Red Stripe. Nights like these don’t just happen. Dubcentral has been carved and sculpted over the years by its own rich history. When it was first growing up and finding its feet, Dubcentral was given a home in 'The Everyone Centre'. This Afro-Caribbean Community Centre is the kind of place where people meet up to play Domino's, eat good food, chat with the friendly staff and watch huge national and international sound systems play music. It was here that the night developed links with the ‘older skool’ dub crew in Sheffield. The likes of Bryon, Yammi, Father Moosey and Teacher Lion will always feature at Dubcentral events as they are as much a part of the tapestry as the décor on the walls. When you find Dubcentral, you want to stay a part of it. You’re always guaranteed to make new friends or bump into old ones. Dubcentral has gone on to feature at some the biggest venues in and around Sheffield. The Boardwalk, Yellow Arch, DLS, Plug, Club Shhh, Adelphi, The Arches, M-Code, Dulo, Corporation, The Harley, The Washington and many others have all hosted an event over the years. As well as new venues, Dubcentral has also seen a lot of new faces. The crew has expanded to include the likes of Emily Vincent, Gita, Fatta, Smiley Maxx, Jamie Headcharge, LegaLiz, Charlie, Mr Meerkat, Megaman, Alex & Alan Deadman, Sista Jahin and Paul Lee (Swami) – now all well recognised names in the city. Dubcentral has become Sheffield’s worst kept secret, growing from strength to strength and gaining more and more followers every month. Although they now do even larger events, such as hosting international bands like Dreadzone, Macka B, Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke and Desmond Dekker, and curating Tramlines World Stage in the Peace Gardens, they have never lost sight of their roots and their ethos: Good music and good vibes! We would like to say thank you to all who have supported us for the last 12 years. Thanks for the fun times, here’s to another 12 years! - Words by Helen Turton From all the Dubcentral Family x |
