Until Ebay gives some protection to the seller, you really cant use it to sell any item worth more than a few pounds, as they will allways take the side of the buyer in any dispute, wether genuine, or, in this case, fraudulant.
Be seeing you.

Seller beware. That's not a scam, just someone trying their luck because he gave them the perfect opportunity. It's his own fault for offering a courier service. He walked into the lions den and got eaten. Tough tits.

If he had specified collection only, (IE organise your own courier, which on a high priced item is a MUST), he would have been fine. Ebay will not cover buyer organised couriers as it's the same as someone collecting it, dropping it on the way to the car and then claiming.

Impart the lesson to him, maybe it will help next time but it's not difficult.

No one is worth your trust. Sell it and let them work it out. NOT YOUR PROBLEM! ''Your courier dropped it'' ''your courier delivered an empty package'' your courier didn't deliver at all'' NONE of these are valid if they pay for their own delivery......

Sorry I can't enter into the pity party but seriously. Why did he offer courier on a high price item? He gave it away right there, it was just a matter of who fleeced him first. Collection only is the only protection you get.... Police? rofl.... if he even gets an incident number I'll surprised. Like literally, not their problem. He has their address.... you know how justice works.... He either gets in his car and has a word or accepts he was inexperienced and got taken for a fool.

It would help  if we knew what the item was, or at least the weight and size. Also who the courier was.

He in fact has 2 contracts, one with the courier to deliver the package intact. Most couriers require the weight of the package to be entered on booking. The second is the insurance (which is probably through the courier). Their contract requires them to insure the safe delivery of the package.

He needs to insist that the courier carries out an investigation. If the collection agent remembers the approximate weight, and the delivery driver remembers a similar weight, then go back to e-bay saying the courier insists that the package was intact.

If the courier can not confirm safe delivery then they are obliged to honour the insurance.

Sounds simple but of course it isn't. He needs to report to the police, and consult a solicitor.

apart from small value items like records etc I won't sell or buy anything off ebay unless it's face to face, I got ripped off once (for quite a small amount) not again
Hope he gets it resolved although I don't hold out much hope.

Never criticise another man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. Once you have, call him what you like, you're a mile away and you've got his shoes!

To clarify a little, parcel was small, about the size of a shoebox, and the weight would have been maybe only 1kg total,so not a big heavy thing. It was booked with Ebay's own carriers, (who,it turns out,sub-contract it to Parcel-link.) They are saying it was delivered intact,so they have completed their contract to deliver the parcel.

The fact remains, if a buyer claims the parcel is just an empty box, (and provides a video of himself claiming to be opening the "first" time an empty box ) ,then ebay will allways take the side of the buyer in any dispute.

Until they close this scam loophole, and protect the seller, it is not safe to sell any high-value item on Ebay. Be warned.
Be seeing you.

similar thing to a mate of mine, sold a playstation in working order, buyer claimed it was faulty and the seller offered to have it back for refund, maybe it had been damaged in the post. Parcel came, my mate refunded the money, opened the box and inside was a housebrick.
In that case ebay found in favour of the seller but it could
have gone the other way.
Sometimes ebay / paypal can be swayed by looking at the feedback, not always to the advantage of the honest party.

I sell a fair bit on eBay still. The 10% fees suck but there is no other platform that offers anywhere near the exposure.

Anything over £100 is strictly Cash on collection or Bank transfer, Anyone that sends a PayPal payment over £100 I return straight away.

It is simply not worth the risk! eBay will ALWAYS take the buyers side from my experience.

On the other hand, I buy loads from eBay. Funnily enough from the point of view of the buyer it is the safest marketplace going.

I was scammed only two days ago on eBay, but as a buyer!

Im assuming I can get my money back but even opening a dispute takes a while and in the meantime the seller has disappeared with my money..

My missus has wanted an Iphone 11 for ages and its her birthday coming up, so when I saw a brand new one packaged up on ebay , with a really professional looking ad, for £399 (about £150-200 cheaper than all the others) I assumed it was a mistype or someone in need of cash quick and bought it...

about an hour later i received a really nice message with a tracking number, saying the parcel had been posted and I should receive it 2 days later

So 2 days later came and i hadn't received anything (apart from an email in my inbox to say it had been delivered) so checked all my messages ect and realised the tracking number that id been sent in a message was different to the tracking number id been provided on the actual sale...

Warning bells start to ring and I checked the profile to see it had only had one review and had been deactivated since my sale!

Checked both the tracking numbers and one was delivered in Bethnal Green (London) and one was delivered in Durham.... I live in BRISTOL!

absolute not nice people...

So now ive opened a case with paypal, im hoping to get my money back soon but can see a long struggle ahead of me, especially if this seller starts lying about what happened, it was clearly a scam

Hope it gets resolved. I had a buyer try to scam me a while ago, fortunately I came out on top, but it could easily have gone the other way.
I find ebay really gives scammers an open invitation on their platform.
I only ever buy on there now, not worth the trouble.

Yeah thinking back last time I sold something high value on there they tried to scam me...

Buyer needed a mixer ASAP for a gig that weekend, I had a DJM850k up for sale and he bought it

it was mint condition, packaged it up perfectly and sent it within his timescale, packaged up great.

About 2 weeks later I had a message saying that he had 'only just tested it' and it had a fault and he wanted a refund. Now I know he bought the mixer for a gig 2 weeks before that so I checked out his Facebook profile which I managed to track down and saw event photos of him MCing with another guy uploaded that weekend on what looked like to be the very same mixer, event was very 'jump up'y, tonnes of people behind the decks, drinks everywhere, redlining the mixer massively..

I instructed him to send the mixer to my repair guy, and I said he will be able to track the source of the problem and tell me how long ago the issue happened, as it was working when sent... He argued a little bit but I insisted and said if it was a pre existing problem I would give him a full refund.. kind of bluffing there as it could of been anything but it worked

He stopped replying, no refund had to be issued, no mixer was received by my repair guy...

He either broke it himself or he 'bought' the mixer for that one gig intending to return it afterwards, a free hire i guess Clap
