Explain DMX to me?

I have a few DMX lasers, some par cans and a dmx smoke machine.

My experience of DMX is just slide faders, up for on etc

Is that all you can do?

	Depending on the device you can adjust PAN, TILT, GOBO's, color filters. But as said depends on the device. for a smoke machine it probably just on and off. Scanners can use a couple of DMX channels, so 1 for tilt, 1 for pan, 1 for colorfilter etc...
