Having all those drivers inside its sensitivity is not spectacular. Just as a reference Void Stasys Prime was 112db with only two 15 inches and one compression driver.

the J8 is more sensitive and efficient than most and also has far higher peak output due to the number of drivers. |

Yeah 200 drivers are for sure more efficient then 2. Read carefully what i am saying. Danley boxes are not very sensitive. They are very power hungry.
J8 claims 153db peak and you need almost 30KW of peak power to produce that. In my book that is not very efficient.

stasys prime is only 35*25 coverage so you need four of them to give the same coverage as one J8. subtract ~6dB to account for that and the danley box looks better |

Why oh Why do you want 153db. If you are in a 30,000 peeps stadium yes I get it. But for most of us it is insanely loud. Most festivals 10mtrs away from the stack point source 115db? Line array I have no idea.
That is permanent hearing loss. after 10min. 153db. Also really quite painful I imagine. Not to mention the electricy bill.

"Why oh Why do you want 153db" Control of the plebs at some of the more rowdy football matches? ![]() And I'd say that the Danley stuff is more high density than high efficiency. High efficiency is 1 or 2 drivers in a cab that "amplifies" the sound - like had to be made in the good ole days when 100W/150W was a big amp - and very expensive. Today the price of a watt is ridiculously low and not really a factor anymore. |

I would also look backwards in time. Those guys with slide rules did have a clue. They sent man too the moon. But built really big speaker boxes too, that were very efficient. BGW gtb anyone.?

Most of the figures quoted are sensitivity, not efficiency. They are an on axis spl measurement. Efficiency is a comparison of output power to input power. As such, increasing the directivity of a cabinet will increase the sensitivity, but not the efficiency. I suspect that Danley like most other manufacturers derive their output figures from calculation. Given that the pdf, linked to, states that the cabinet uses 10 10” LF drivers, and 12 6” mid drivers, the figures show that the synergy horn is providing very little to the proceedings. Take a single 10” driver, say a B&C 10HPL64. The rated sensitivity is 98.5dB/W/m call it 99 as we are into marketing BS. For every doubling of drive units the output goes up a theoretical 6dB, so: 1 = 99, 2 = 105, 4 = 111, 8 = 117, plus a bit for the extra 2 drive units. (J8 claims 119) The drive units are rated at 400W music power (4000 total), so using a 10dB increase for every 10X power and 3dB per 2X: 1 = 117, 10 = 127, 100 = 137, 1000 = 147, 2000 = 150, 4000 =

Yes fudge all calculated I expect.
But if Marjan is correct (lets go the other way) 153db at 30kw. 150db at 15kw, 147 at 7500w, 144db at 3500w. etc. Still really loud. and a lot of noise for 3.5k. This is of course all calculated. Pinch of salt anyone.?

30k? With all of the college stadiums, there is a significant US market of 70k+ venues. Plenty of festivals have 60m deep dance floors, too. Audio isn't anywhere as power hungry as heating/cooling systems, though. Think of all the vendors cooking food with electric ovens and stoves and storing the food in cooled or even frozen units

Sorry to keep going on. Those 60mtr dance floors will be serviced by delay hangs won't they? Will they really put one 153db stack at the front and hope half of the audience wears ear plugs.
I think my point was how many of us would really benefit from a 153db speaker box i.e. the common man. How many on here have installed a stadium? I think for most a poultry 130db is fine. Just my thinking.

The thread starter was asking about efficient loudspeaker
designs. The synergy horn was brought up as a possible solution. However, the
figures of the product linked to, don’t support the notion of it being very
efficient, unless by efficient you mean highest output from smallest box. Additionally, if you also calculate a 6dB drop in sound
level for each doubling of distance, at full chat this box should be able to
produce 117dB at 64m. Here in the UK,
the HSE recommends that levels at events should not exceed LAeq of 107 dB (Events
are not covered by Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 hence the
recommendation). Situations where the closest listeners are over 100m away from
the loudspeaker can’t be that plentiful. |
