While it is indeed stupid to put fake speakers on stage, I think the FOH engineer is quite happy in the end  LOL

At the end of the day, it's a good backdrop for a heavy metal band. Even if they were real, only 1 or 2 speakers ever get a mic stood up in front of them.

Hi Tony, I know you made some great cabs for John so was wondering if you could shed some light on a driver I have.

A couple of years ago I got a precision devices 15" driver cheap off ebay. It had no model number and as it was cheap i just took a chance on it with the intention of making a bottom cab for my bass guitar rig. Anyway when it arrived the box has PD15TE01 written on it but i cant find any reference to that model number and pd didnt answer my emails about it. But also written on the box was Quarwood. I know this was John's house name and i wondered if this driver had been his or was intended for him and maybe you would know something about it.

It has been sitting in my shed for a couple of years as i dont know what cab would suit it best as i have no t/s params for it.

I was thinking of building a reflex cab but dont know what size it needs or how it should be tuned. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved?

Really, it's not stupid at all. The wall of speaker cabinets is designed as a stage set and they don't all need to be practical. It's there to look good and provide a visual image for the show.

And yes, if the backline cabinets were all in use it would be virtually impossible to get a good sound balance for the audience.

I don't recognize that model number for the PD speaker. The speakers I used for John's speakers were Fane  400 watt 15's and the 200 watt studio 12's There were some cabs with 5's in that were introduced  later as an experiment, but were dropped because they were a bit to cutting. The high end out of the 12's were enough. Of course, the whole rig was active.

Cheers Tony, I will try pd again for info. Interesting about the 12"s I had been thinking of using a single 12 for the top end of my rig in a reflex box with a sloping baffle to try and hear myself a bit better rather than slaying the crowd with tons of bass while i can hardly hear myself over the guitars in the small rooms we play. A while ago when my cab was out of action i had a temporary rig set up in the practice room that had two stacked 18" subs from our pa and a single 12 box on top at head height. This was bi amped from my GK800RB head and the sound was great. Loads of trowser flap from the 18s and I could here myself perfectly from the 12 at head height without being over loud.

That 12 was a cast chassis fane also, i have a pair of them in some old disco boxes along with hf250s that i picked up cheap. I tried to get the params for them from fane with a view to using one in my rig but all they could tell me was that theywere made in the early 80s for Titan and were rated around 100w.

I've just remembered, the 15's in John's rig were 15" colossus. Basically, they were PA speakers, but of course that what the bottom end of the rig was. They were just BS500's.

Haha, fake speaker stacks are so much lighter and the sound is sooo good if they just look good:-)

I did this fake FIRE soundsystem for some reggae dudes from Denmark:

Basscouch, my friends from Denver Colorado did this "funktion fake":-)

The fun is that behind the fake system there's a single set of danley sh-50s & two labhorns under the truck.

Shit happens when u get high:-) -like fake speakers...
