Looking at a job this morning, 200m of festoon strung around a (closed) car park. Need some stands to support the festoon, was thinking about oil drums with concrete / water fill with the pole stuck out the top. Any one done this and have a validated design, how much balast needed etc?

Cheers,

Oil drums can tip if someone climbs them, wouldn't use anything water filled because they may get emptied by a member of the public. On hardstanding we use steel plate or ibcs full of soil plus steel wires between poles.

Is there any fence posts etc around the car park you can ratchet strap poles too?

Water is easier to deal with than concrete in stuff as you can just let it go after. Having piles of concrete to deal with after a gig isn’t ideal.

I was wondering that about oil drums so cheers. What sort of size is your steel plate, did some rough calcs and a 600x600 plate with 3.5m pole still needs some serious balast, will look at 1mx1m next?

Only a very low barrier, would not be strong enough for anything, couple lamp posts, although both have been hit by cars and are a tad wonkey.

1.2m x 2m, that for a xmas market for 8 weeks.

you could maybe get away with wind up stands with extra ballast depending on span.

Also worth looking into builders merchants that may do a favour. We regularly blag two or three big pallets of bagged sand as ballast for a winter light festival. It’s only one night, they drop and collect for a mention in the program, a bottle of good spirits and a box of chocs for the office… we pay for any damaged bags which isn’t much.
blah blah blah blah blah......

I am tending towards a similar design I think, do you have any pics so I can show the festival people? Do you rent them out, this festival is in Kenilworth?

Historically we have done this, but with the availability of materials at the moment I am not too sure we will be able to, but will give it a go.
