Hi guys just a heads up to you guys that are using 1850 or 186 Horns

Over on the Bill fitzmaurice forum there is the concept of V-plating

Here is what it looks like with BFM Titans that are very similar in size and shape to 1850s

There has finally been a proper SPL test of how well this works and the results were as follows

Sine wave at 60Hz, Cabs placed on concrete driveway.

+4dB with the coupler

It seems that at 80Hz and up the coupler does not have as much of an effect, but put it this way, if you only have space to haul 2 cabs around, V-coupling them is likely to give you at least 3dB at 60Hz and below which may give you more sub and a warmer sounding low end.

I cant begin to estimate what it would do for a stack of 6 but for all you sub lovers there's only one way to find out.

If anyone does do this please post results and tell us how well it works.

Stu

All you need to know is:
Sensitivity + Power Handling - Power Compression = Max Output

Would it be recommended to put a couple between every pair of boxes if you stacked vertically with this?

I could theoretically give this a go with our Looneys, if I can find some wood lying about. Not too sure how well it'd do regards to stopping people who already use bassbins as shelving for their drinks though. Bar perhaps shaking them back out again.

they were doing something similar in cinemas for many years

if you were to keep stacking you wouldn't need that partition

I think the limit to Fc of the horn with 1850s/186s is achieved with 4 boxes.

However not only does the coupler increase the effective mouth size but also puts another bit on the length of the horn, which should in effect achieve a slightly lower Fc.

So whether you use more cabs or not you might find an improvement in extension over straight stacking

@Toasty I think the recommendation is to just have the cabs stacked up with the coupler at the top, does it matter if its one large cavity or several smaller cavities? I doubt it.

Well it should keep the mouths of the horns away from the public, they would have to reach in to put their drinks there.

Why not build a 20 pc. cup/bottle holder into the top, to try and prevent spilled drinks.

That might not be such a silly idea

I might give it a go if it only needs one then, to get the Looney stack's very bottom end up to the savage volume of the 50Hz and up.

You can EQ in the low end on them once you have a large enough total mouth area too.

Heres an image from the BFM site of a chart of V-coupled Tubas vs stacked. The scale is rather too small for my liking but you get the idea.

can you imagine what it would be like if you stacked 6 looneys 3 high and stood under that "coupler"!

i think to keep people from hiding inside your bins it would be worth puting one between each set but it is alot of extra wood to take on a gig, a small price to pay so you dont have to pull crumpled up crustys out of the stack at the end tho
