I was originally going to build a pair of 184 subs for my band which plays wife beatin rock and roll. I was confident in this design, but when I was looking through some of the other topics in this website forum another design caught my eye. The ES-18BPH is in the general questions section. Is this design better than the 184 for my needs. I'm looking for a sub to handle kick drum and bass. I don't need the sub to reproduce really low bass just down to ~40-50Hz very well. The music we play doesn't really need the lows of recorded music, I just want a good kick and bass sound. A large horn would have too big of a footprint and too hard to load in/out for the places we play, that is why I choose the 184 in the first place. The places we play are ~200 people on average.  The 184 design is good and it looks like the ES-18BPH is also a good design. Any ideas out there on which one to build to fit my needs.  Any users of the ES-18BPH out there to chime in on this. Thanks.

For your needs the ES-18BPH would probably suit you fine even just one per side. I have built both of the designs you mention over the last 6 months and they really are different animals.

With the 184's you get bass of nearly hi-fi quality extending to 30 - 35 hz thats so solid you can almost chew it.

The BPH used in singles give you usable energy down to 50hz and plenty of attack for kick and fine for Bass guitar. Even used in singles the output is quite directional.

Both are capable of high output levels, the 184 about 130 db and the BPH about 132db @ 1m for the rated input. These figures are based on the PD184 in the Sub and an SD18 in the BPH.

But seeing as the 184 has a 400W capacity and the SD18 a 800W capacity, the 184 would be about 1dB more sensitive with 400W input into both so they are pretty evenly matched so its simply a question of do you want kick or sub?

All you need to know is:
Sensitivity + Power Handling - Power Compression = Max Output
