I consider building a 4-way system. What do you think of using the
HD15s as low mids over 18" Scoop Bins? (the question is primarily about
the HD15s, not the scoops ;-))

Depends on what you call low mids. Use the scoops as pure subs, cross over to the HD15's for bass at around 70-80Hz and then over to your mid tops at about 140-160hz and they work fine. That way you work the HD15s purely in their most efficient band and you keep the scoops out of the problematic phase cancellation area of around 80hz in the case of a superscooper. I've always found balance between the two a bit tricky. 1 Scoop to 2 HD15's lacks the punch that I've grown used to from using just stacks of HD15's. 1 Scoop to 4 HD15's runs out of headroom on the subs far too quickly... |

Low mids I'd say is around 250hz-600hz.

ijaman,
I'm currently considering the same option but I'm not sure what I'm gonna use on the bottom yet. For the time being I have access to plenty of single 18" reflex boxes which are used from 35-160Hz. They sound ok, but do lack some punch. I'm about to try building some HD15's or variations on as I have some spare Kappa15LF's and then try sticking them between the 18's and the tops, probably crossed over around 80 and 160Hz. The HD15's are most effective as Dom said from 70-250Hz. As always it probably depends what sort of music you're going to be playing to what size of venue whether it's worth going for a four way system. |
