still deciding on what to go with the 1850s (4)
prolly going with the porn mids and tops but want something inbetween... would something like this be good? (2 of): ![]() ![]() what driver would be good? cant seem to get any sense from google. Would we be wanting 500w? looking for a bit more punch but can't stretch to 4 hd15s. Edited by tendril - 11 November 2005 at 1:46pm |

You almost wouldn't need anything inbetween. Even then,a pair of HD15's would probably be better.
The driver on that sheet (PS-15) is an old eminence driver. |

I have heard 4 looneys with 2 porn mids and 2 porn tops and unless they
weren't set up correctly, they seemed a bit weak in upper bass.
the hd15s fall off sharply at about 230Hz. Would this be high enough to achieve a more punchier sound (for the house.. breaks prolly ok) Edited by tendril - 11 November 2005 at 6:28pm |

Maybe want a slightly longer exponential for a kick horn, like 1m+, it will probably spend 99% of its life radiating with no boundary loading. Look at the funktion1 kick horn 100-200hz, spot on to cover between an 1850&an mt122/porns.
I was crazy for a kick horn a while back, but after really playing with eq settings i've found 1850 & mt102s to be very good (not perfect), just have to power the mid horns well. At the mo my setup is two 1850's with 3.8Kw, 1 mt102 with 1.2Kw x'ed over at 180hz.
I've made loads of eq presets for different music genres, when its lacking kick i just wang up 100-200hz, endless fun pratting around with the equalizer
(easier than building more cabs) |

The plan above *might* be okay with Eminence Kappa15.
I have rather similar bins (Altec 816), that do well with kappa's (They were recommended to me by Eminence). These designs just don't go very low! One can expect low cutoff around 150-200Hz (I think they are most efficient between 200Hz-800Hz, where the horn really works. The ports doesn't offer any real-life efficiency at least in my bins!). I use 2" horns on top of Altecs and folded horns below and have been pretty satisfied how they work at least in live application! Anyway they are NOT kick bins! More like lower middle.. Cheers, -hiphei- |

Any system can be abused or not set up well at all, which can mean the best systems sound rubbish- even more of a pity! I think the HD15 will do |

I use a similar cab to the design above for upper bass above an 18"W. Mine are loaded with JBL 2220s reconed with another JBL kit but I forget which off the top of my head (it has an aluminium dustcover). Good and punchy but Im sure theres better technology available now
