Pretty much can't decide between ES18 or USB'S - anybody?? They will be going under our current tops (6 of em)
Benefits of usbs are obviously you don't need to bring the hogs out if its a small techno night etc, etc. Edited by Electrikal - 31 May 2011 at 2:58am |

Second question/point first - some of my friends run stacks of 4 es18 either side for techno nights with floodlights on top of them and it sounds great. I have run a stack of 6 hd-15's down to 40 and it was fine for techno so the USB's arnt really any better or worse than other bandpass assisted horns. Most of these short bandpass assisted horns will happily play 1 way bass for techno or other kick drum lead music but suffer compared to a 2 way system on D&B and Dub.
I have used USB's HD15's ES18's and F218mk2's on top of my hogs and the difference in kick is minimal. Its much more to do with the crossover than the type of bin as all of these can reproduce the 80-180hz region between a hog and a midtop. Personally I think hd-15's are the best as they are small enough to be lifted easily by 1 man and have easily enough output to be fine in a 1 to 1 ratio with hogs. From your previous posts it seems you are having difficulty with your kick section of you rig. I think that maybe a lot of time spent fiddling with crossover points/slopes and more importantly delays might improve your chances. Alternatively maybe the issue the fact that you keep using a bandpass assisted horn for this range, a lot of reggae systems seem happy with bass reflex kick above scoops. This has a different sound from the bandpass horns you have been using and doesnt suffer from the "honking" that a lot of people seem to hear when bandpass horns are crossover high. What are your crossover points and delays you have been using with the hd's youve got and previously with the mid tops Tom built you with the bandpass kick section. Also I know you guys do systems for all sorts of music tastes. It may be that the kick you are looking for that is so necessary in some types of music is simply not dealt with very well by the 2 way bass of the hogs with kick bins. I know that for techno I would much rather put out 6 hd-15's than 3 hogs and 3 hd-15's because it just sounds tighter and better playing that sort of music via a one way bass setup rather than a 2 way. |

We took the mid down from 220 to 170 - then crossed the hd15's over and down to 100(ish mark) can't quite remember(im not the sound tech)
I did quite like the size of HD-15's though. The kick is pretty good on our system but it doesn't quite do it for techno/jungle/hardcore etc. the hogs are too boomy to run upto 120ish mark and would prefer them sitting around 80-90. Thanks for the advice it leans me more towards the usbs as a one way bass/kick setup. Richard |

I run my Hogs Butterworth 48db/oct 30hz to 77hz L-R 24db/oct. The HD's then run L-R 24db/oct from 77hz to 160 L-R 24db/oct. I think you may have been crossing your hogs over too high and using them to play some of the lower kick frequencies. Combine this with a delay that isnt exactly spot on and it all results in a lot of muddiness around the hard kick drum of techno. Personally whilst hogs will reach 120hz I think they sound much better only doing upto around the 70-80hz region from a steep 30hz cutoff. I have run my hd's upto 220 in the past but from my own experiments they sound best only going upto about 160hz. After this the "honk" comes into play. I think the problem with your system is processing with eq and crossover points not with the types of cabinets.
I honestly dont think there is a lot of difference between usb's and ES-18's. If anything from my experiance with both of then the ES-18 drops a tiny bit lower. I would still say that 6 HD's put out as much bass as 4 of either of the other designs but obviously require more amp power but then again provide a better stack height for mid tops. Have a play with your crossover settings and find out what your delays are set at and hopefully someone can maybe point out whats going wrong. Hope this helps.
