Having pretty much given up all hope of finding another HH V800 at a sensible price, much as I love HH, sadly I'll be having to change direction slightly. I'm looking for a recommendation from the experienced here (hence posting in the oldies section rather than 'wanted', because I'm really not interested in the latest 1/2u chinese grillion watt PMPO 'techtronics' or whatever the current buzz word is jobbies).
What I'm after is a rack mount amp with the following specs, the first are must haves, the seconds are perfection - and better still, if you've got one cluttering up some space you'd happily free up......:-))
Must be:- Solid, reliable, old school, proper RMS rated and offering a minimum circa 450wpc at 8r - the 8r bit is important to me at this stage.
To allow for expansion, ideally it will also be rated at something north of 700/750+wpc at 4r.
An alternative could be a pair of amps, each one running bridged to achieve the above?, ideas?
Really key for me is reliability at the rated output, I'm way too old to be carting about racks of spare amps in case the main stuff goes pear shaped.
Recommedations very greatfully received chaps.....
Greg

Greg, how about these:-
C-Audio SR 606, 707, 808 or the RA2001, 3001 - All proper watts Citronic PPX 900, 1200, 1600 - Again proper watts BGW 750 - Yet again, proper watts. And I'm still thinking of others... also thinking of your spine carrying a rack with any of those in it! |

All of these above,plus..... Peavey 1980's CS series. Studiomaster 800c,800b, only 2x400w into 4ohms,but the loudest 400 watts you will ever hear.Massive lump of a transformer inside. HH vx series, less fashionable than the V800,and hence cheaper. Bose P1800 (not Bose at all, built by BGW). |

Eddie/Ian - terrific, thanks guys, plenty of pointers to research there.
Much as I also love the old bombproof PPX series, finding the larger models in reliable condition, and at a sensible non-dreamer price!, seems to have become too much of a gamble these days.
Not too knowledgable on the C-Audio range, so that's one for me to research.
The Studiomasters have always appealed but, again, seemingly rare as hens teeth - I did see an 800b on the bay recently but miised the sale....
BGW - there's a new one on me I think.
Sean - thanks for that pointer re the old HH, I've pinged a 'Contact Us' message to them on the off chance they've got a spare V8 or two kicking about...
Cheers guys

PPX 900 fits your requirements perfectly.
I own 10[at the moment ] PPX amps and all have proved to be 100% reliable. And only one of those 10 needed a little attention when I got them. You should be able to get hold of a decent one for around £100 |

Next time I go to the lock up I'll take a pic of my PPX900 (the only PPX I've got left). To look at it you'd think it'd been dropped from height several times, been doused with water several times, been used as a step, had a date with Rolf Harris and his paintbrushes, been shorted a couple of times, been left in a flightcase outside overnight in the frost etc etc. And you'd be right! And the thing still refuses to die! The most robust amp I've ever owned Greg. Edited by djeddie - 10 June 2012 at 10:19am |

Can anybody point me to that really helpful PPX whole range spec sheet somebody posted on SP a few months ago?, I thought I'd saved a copy somewhere but I'll be darned if I can find it!
I want to check the PPX900 specs - I thought it was 450wpc into 4r not 8r. If it is 450wpc into 8r, I'd then be very interested in what it produces into 4r because one of those could meet my current needs into 8r cabs and later expansion into 4r.

The bgws are absolute tanks when they get going, had the pleasure of 4 of them in a venue I worked at. Can also vouch for the Caudio ra's |

The PPX900 is rated at 450 per side @4ohms but they will run in to 4ohm bridged without problems. |

Only problem with the BGW's is finding them...particually the 750 A,B,C and later versions, great amps, there just isnt many around.
The ppx900,although not as pretty as a V800,is quite plentiful, and as said above, really solid pukka built thing, with 14 fuses inside,as well as all the other limiter and thermal protection, you have to do something really stupid to kill one. Even if you did manage to fry the Hitachi K176/J56 mosfets, they are still available if you search around,so no reason the amps cant last indeffinately. |

What about a QSC Series 3 3800? 360w @ 8r, 600w @ 4r and 950w @2 per channel, dual mono, 2 power supplys 2 separate modules so if 1 side goes down the other carrys on,
i have 3 of them, 2 i use and i as a back up, but have never let me down. there power figures seam to be a little under rated in my experience, iv used them on my 2x18 w bins rated at 3k and they drive them hard with no clipping.
