Finally made some studio monitors

I have been messing around with some old Wharfedale linton 3XP sealed boxes, with new drivers in, for some time as my office "studio" systems.

Isobarically loaded 2x8", original 4" mid, modified front plate Fountek NeoCD1.0, tri-amped off Quad 520C, DSP courtesy of a Sabine NAV4800.

Not bad, but wanted more. Finally finished them!

Piles of wood. Top, bottom, front, rear and both braces are 1" MDF.


First curve is prepped, pattern transferred to all other bits by router with bearing cutter.

Baffle layup, ready to recess drivers. Bass is Wharfedale 2065T, a simple 8" driver from there 2180/3180 install range. Cheap but I like them.



5" mid is a bit more up market, a Dynaudio 15W75 ( got two from buying a Audience120+ for £40 from the bay) HF is a modded front plate Fountek Neo CD1.0 1.5" ribbon.


Assembly: Biscuits, Titebond and lots of Brads. And Janets.





Mid Enclosure. The 15W75 (15w75_data.pdf) is a bit of a sod, 5" driver with a 3" voice coil! Very "square" basket, as apposed to the cone we may be used to. Easy Solution, to get some MDF circles from CarFi shops, to get depth, to mount its own backbox onto.





Sides were a basterd. 4.5mm hardboard, soaked both sides with a water spray, and left to soften slightly. Then glued and bradded to anything offering grip below, i.e braces front back top bottom 1" MDF. 3 layers more, each with shed loads of titebond evenly smothered by glue roller, over entire surface. The green layer was under floor insulation hardboard that I had kicking about, but seemed to bend and offer sound absorption Dampness of wood, helped draw PVA into them, and all went very solid.



Afer trimming with multi tool, sanding to 400 grit, ronseal white 1 part filler, more 400 grit, time to slap on the TuffCab, Pro no less. 2 layers with yellow foam roller, top coat with gloss foam roller.





M6 Threaded inserts on bottom, to attach to floor stands:


1 fully loaded, 2.5mm 2 core visible in other done back to single NL8. 2" fluffy stuff lined everything inside, and in mid box.

From what I have heard of your "problem", you would never leave a partially drunk can about the place. "Open, Straw, down-in-one Eddie" is your name on that other forum you hang about.

I think that is the lid from a tin of servisol, but other aerosols are available. Once drinking is complete, good to put errant screws and bolts in too, whilst disassembling/reassembling something.

If you have a CNC, vey easy to be very accurate and repeatable, and then you can build in some wood-worker detail, like marquetry or similar multi-wood walls.
