I have 6 Cerwin Vega L36 subs which all need their drivers replaced. Any recommendations on what to load them with?

I would not recommend replacing them with any decent driver until you have sorted out what is wrong with your system---the original 189E drivers are famous over the years for being able to really stand up to life in high power systems.

Ditto that,if you have managed to kill all six of those, is something wrong. What do you have your LF cut-off set at?

Had them crossed at 85hz with some kicks. Think I was just driving too much power through them for too long? Was using them with the AD420 amp @4ohms at about 35-40% at a party and they started giving out after 3-4 hours.

More important would be your low end HPF. What did you have that set at?

I meant what was your lower cut off. I just checked the specs, the L36 is loaded down to 39hz, so as Jace says above, 40hz cut-off.
Be seeing you.

Oh yeah, my bad. Don't think there was a low pass on it actually... can that completely mess up a speaker if it plays too low?

A high pass.

And that's a massive amp for them too.

Yeah.. even if the OP's estimates are accurate that is about 1500w into what is an 800w continuous(400wrms) driver, they might just survive momentary 1500w peaks but outfits that use these boxes tend to be into long sustained bass lines so chances are you cooked them good.

CV doesn't help at all with the published specs for these things.. telling people they are 2000w with response down into the 30's, it's no wonder EVERYBODY blows these up.

I seem to remember somebody suggesting the B&C 18TBX100 as a potential upgrade, it's a very rugged driver with higher power handling but you still can't be putting 2kw into them for this type of use, the driver is in a sealed chamber where heat builds up more and more the longer they run. Have a look at this old thread for some more info.. CERWIN VEGA L-36pe, opinions??? - Speakerplans.com Forums - Page 1
