Just been browsing the Scoop forum, getting envious of all the guys with their "premier league" 18" Scoops. I am particularly interested in the HOG scoop. Due to its re thought design.
I know that many people have trouble getting a great kick box to go on top of their 18" Scoops and thought about what a great Kick I remember 15" Scoops to have... So I've come up with this - never designed a proper speaker in my life before - so it may be sh*t. But I really want some comments!
Just popped into my head lol. May make some dimensions up and build a pair just for the crack. What do the more experienced guys think? Would it work? - Joe. |

yes it will work its just like anyother scoop, you have to be more calculated than drawing it on paint though, your going to need to simulate it on the computer and come up with some real dimentions, weather it will kick or not is another matter, scoops have phase issuses where sound from the driver is in or out of phase with sound comeing from the horn depending on the fequency being played so you could find you have a dip in the response around the 80-100hz area like most scoops do and thus no kick

One of the problems you might encounter is the phase cancellation between the direct radiation and the scoop popping up in the range you want to use. You'll also need a small rear chamber I think.

Ah, I forgot about the phase cancellation thing with Scoops. Seems it may not work in the right range then...
I may continue to tweak the design into a build-able cab - and then do an mdf prototype. And I first drew it up by hand, on paper. I just used paint to get it on the forums - thats no where near a plan - I only had the idea 30 mins ago! - Joe. |

but as the horn path is much smaller, wont the cancelation happen at a higher frequency than you'll be playing them?

100Hz is 343cm so if the horn was 170cm it'd be perfectly in phaze at 100Hz, am i right?

You also have to consider where the scoop mouth is smaller than the wavelength produced it acts like a transmission line, and the wave reflects back down the scoop. You have the 180degree phase shift since it comes out the back compared to the direct radiator. You when have 1/4 wave going down the scoop, another 1/4 reflecting back (so in total a 1/2 wavelength phase shift). THis 1/2 wavelength shift is for the '180degree' shifted radiation, so now, you have it in phase.The ammount of 'refelection' back up the scoop is frequency dependant. But the point is at some frequencies you're gonna get interference and others destruction. I don't know if this is expressed very well, sorry!

i agree with the above points.
smokeyjoe, also take into consideration the size of this potential cabinet for your proposed aplication. scoops are pretty large cabinets, using a scoop sized cab above them for kick bins means even more big boxes to have to carry/ transport.
i think if i were to go for a kick bin above my scoops it would have to be nice & compact like the HD15 for example.

Well, it is intended to run 70~140Hz. Its not by any means a long horn, and wouldn't be that much bigger than a HD15. It would be as wide as a Scoop and not very tall. Designed to stack on top of a vertical row of Scoops.
Does anyone know of any FREE MAC-FRIENDLY software I could use to model this? And, its only for fun - nothing serious. I just hope its loud .
