Guys, just need some advice. I'm planning to get a double 18'' G sub loaded with either PD186 or Fane 18xb. I already have a Crown Pulse 2 * 1100 my questions are
1) Is this amp upto the job of driving these subs, i think the fane are 1200W @ 4 and PD186 might be slightly more. If not which amp should i be looking to purchase
2) I know it's an amp forum but which drivers are better Fane or PD. The PDs are slightly more but i'll rather get what's suitable.
3)If i need to change my amp how much Crown Pulse 2 * 1100 are worth
Many thanks in advance Edited by yodominic - 11 February 2009 at 2:45pm |

We used to run 2 twin 15" cabs (W bins) from a Pulse 1100. The cabs were loaded with Fane 15XB's so 1200W per cab needed per side.
The amp did okay but failed after about 3-4 years occasional use. We've actually had two die on us now. I think there are two problems with them: 1. Not ideally suited to sub use 2. Many (all?) need mods to bring them up to the latest spec in order to be reliable For our use it was probably a bit underpowered. The amp puts out (in theory) 1100 watts a side into 4 ohms; ideally you want 1.5x to 2x the rms rating of the speakers so you can run them hard without being in danger of clipping the amp. We managed to get one of ours repaired and up to date; the other one is languishing in my loft waiting for me to decided whether its worth sending off for someone else to have a go at repairing it (I think its been to about 3 people so far including Harman). |

The Pulse 1100 wont last long on sub duty.
They are great amps for upper bass or mid & are pretty popular, I dont think you will have any problems selling it if its surplus to your requirements.
I use a Pulse 1100 to drive my mids & I think its a superb amp.

I'm not sure of the current second hand value of the Pulse 2x1100, I would guess at £250 - 350 depending on condition & whether the mods to the power supply have been carried out.
There are a lot of good amps for driving sub, of course it all depends on budget. Do you need to power one G Sub (2x18") or a pair (4x18")?

Power a pair each containing 2 * 18''. Ideally something in the region of 1200 W @ 4OHM per side.

weather you go for PD186 or Fane XB, 2000w @ 4ohm per side would be more ideal.
So you could go for 2 small amps that can do 2000 watt @ 4ohm in bridge & use 1 per G Sub.
Or get a large amp that can do 2000 watt @ 4ohm per channel & run both cabs off of the 1 amp.
the first option is usually the cheapest, but how much are you looking to spend?
I also use four Fane 18XB for sub, I use a Chevin A6000 to driver 2 XB per channel. These amps sell between £800-1000 second hand.
Other amps that are popular for the same aplication are the Crown 5000VZ & the larger Crest amps. These can also be purchased for a similar price.

My price range is about 600 - 700. I was thinking something like JBL MPX1200, EV P3000 or even Matrix p3000. Not heard much about the Matrix prior to joining this site but on here people rate them quite highly. The PD186 are 700w and Fane are 600 so 1200 or 1400 depending on which i choose.
In terms of using 2 smaller amps i already have a QSC RMX2450 and quite happy with their performance, the rating from QSC is as follows (last column is RMX 2450.
So as per above rated 2400w @ 4 ohm bridged. Is this too powerful to damage the speakers? I can pick up a similar for about £300. Edited by yodominic - 11 February 2009 at 2:18pm |

The JBL, EV & Matrix amps are all very highly rated, though I have had no experience of them myself I know many other forum members have.
The QSC that you have will do 2000watt @ 4ohm bridge running bass, so buying another one is an option. you wont over drive the G Subs with that much power, infact they will sound great. The QSC 2450 do run rather hot though.
You might wish to change the title of this thread to be more specific regarding the amp to drive G Subs, you will get more opinions on the subject.
Dan.

id go for the EV P3000, i used one to drive 2x PD186 per side reflex in single cabs similar too the gsub. Plenty of headroom, very good amplifier, well respected throughout the touring scene for its sound quality and reliability.
best of all they come on ebay a fair bit and can be got for as little as 500 quid used.

Thanks guys for all the advice, looking to purchase EV 3000 as it comes widely available through ebay or here but JBL is quite cheap to buy second hand roughly about £350 - £400 compared to EV between £600-650. What you guys think of using matrix 3000? also any other suggestions in the price range of 400 - 600. Also which drivers are better Fane Col 18xb or PD 186?
