right iv had to give up guitar [my wrist is screwed beyond redemption because a doctor had been fobbing me off with the "its an rsi, come back in a couple of weeks itl be fine" for a couple of years and iv now found out its tendonitis and a few other complications. ive now lost my job [well whos gonna hire a guitarist who cant play????] so im lumbered with my guitar stack [which is new and been used once... i cant sell it cos the new price dropped to nearly half wot i paid for it a few months ago!] and i now have a lack of mid tops for smal house parties. i have 2 4x12 ibaneze guitar cabs. wot i am now considering my only option is to take all 8 of the 12" drivers out,,, get some 2" tweeters and try and build some boxes similar to the x12 or a similar design to the mt102 [but to take 12" 100w drivers? mite be a crap idea!!!] or should i just build some 12" pa type cabs [you know the generic ones] id prob have to x-over low as well cos the ibanez pj12 has a freq resp of about 30hz<2khz wud the x12 design work?

I have to say that guitar drivers aren't designed to work in main pa, the T/S-parameters are quite lousy, they work fine with guitar sound. It gives the guitar sound smooth and warm tone, 'cause of the usually high Qts and higher distortion values and they also lack the power handling and linear excursion. It's quite the opposite what you want in main pa.

yeah but i think these might be cheap pa drivers cos they sound anything but warm! been using them as full range cabs [well just plugged a 1/4th jack lead into my guitar head and stuck them next to my mates rig at beach parties a few times [drowned his 4k stack out but was a bit harsh sounding cos its one way and only goes to 2khz] if i could sell the cabs id just spend the money on normal drivers but the cabs cost me 250 quid each and the head cost the same. been trying to flog the whole stack for like350-400 [its been used about four times i gave up guitar a few days after i got the stack] but everyone thinks its 2 much!

Thats kool then, but why u tell him you could get a pair new for 480 ish. Thats not a good way to sell stuff. I put stuff at the price I want. And unless the person finds it cheaper alsewhere or doesn't want to pay that price; I keep quiet until they have gone. If they find it cheaper alsewhere when they have given over the money and left; tough sh*t, you got what you wanted for the item. And the buyer is the fool for not checking first how much it really sells for. So if you still got them cabs put them in loot online or loot paper, best place to sell stuff without paying selling fees like ebay. Guitar drivers, especially 100w drivers are gonna be useless for mid/high cabs. Depending on your budget, you can easierly build some mid/highs and bass bins unless you are totally skint atm. And I can tell/show you were to get quality drivers cheaper.

firstly, my dear friend's session 1x12" 50 watt guitar amp is louder than my 6k system, but only over a narrow frequency band. it is a session though and is absolutely riotous, but it is very easy to make guitar range stuff heard, just check out how audible the backline is at most gigs. secondly, universal hi-fi have 4 2x10" mids made from an 8x10" bass guitar cab. like your driver's they will probably have a paper surround, not a cambric (woven cotton) one. they sound horrible. use pa drivers for pa, use guitar drivers for guitars. or don't, and then post in about a months time moaning that your cabs sound poo. james. |

do some t/s measurements on them as well as a free air frequency plot it might help you determine what to do with them food for thought though is that once upon a time speakers meant for guitars were thought ideal for horns due to the rising response which can be countered by the horn itself |

they are made by ibanez.... they are the power jam 12" im trying to find out the t/s but dont think they are on the ibanez site... oh and the 2 4x12"s and 120watt head was running at half power and was runing of the mixer [or in other words was recieving the identical program material to the other rig] and apart from lack of sparkle [therse no tweeter... which is why i could never get much top end outa my guitar...] still sounded better than the other rig [which was a pile of old toa/peavey/kustom lowend hand me downs ] and this isnt for main pa more a sort of back up rig for those "weve got a small room free and we wanna party"/bugger my band have no pa to rehearse with momens |

LOL 10db 1w/1m they are gonna be very quiet then. I think they meant it to be 100db 1w/1m. Otherwise if they are 10db at 1w/1m they will be f**king useless for anything. Anyway 78hz-5khz is low midrange-upper midrange frequencies. They might be ok with tweeters except they don't handle much power. No good for bass at all though. I dunno if they will work in a X12 design though. Stick them in a sealed mid/top box and they should sound ok and cross them over at 120hz.

Or..... wait for it.... Sell the Guitar cabs as-is (probably worth
enough to make it worthwhile) and buy some cheap (probably P-Audio) PA
drivers. You'll get much better results that way.
As an aside, if playing the guitar has given you/made tendonitis worse, what's woodwork going to do to your wrist??? |
