Topic: Whole new system!!Posted: 07 February 2006 at 5:56pm |

Hi! I recently got a little mission from my school to get them a whole new and complete speakersystem! I have searched the whole web until I found this site!(Just registered Now, my school donīt really have a whole lot of money, though they need a big system to be used at medium to large outdoor occasions and quite large indoor occasions. So Iīve looked through all of the speakers and read just about everything on this forum but still I canīt decide.. Iīve thought of something like two 18" superscoops loaded with Voids and then two X15s with suggested equipment but used with a passive filter (to save some cash). Iīve also thought of Four 1850boxes with Voids in them and then two MT102s(with passive filters). A stack of HD15s could also be an option though I havent thought of wich mid/tops to use with them. Whatīs your opinion on what to use? Yours sincerly, Robin. |

passive crossovers aint a good idea. the power that drivers will take u will find it difficult and expensive to find crossoevrs to take that kind of power

Yeah Iīve thought of that and Iīve read about someone using seleniums passive crossovers. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&P artnumber=264-260 They should do the work? As I said my school donīt have a load of cash but a large need of SPL! |

Spend your money wisely, You say you want to use passive crossovers? but how many are you goin to be needing? 2-4-6? why not buy one active crossover unit to do the job for you, Also as your talking about PD 1850's and Void 18''s im sure your budget will allow maybe Ģ100 for-150 for a active crossover-where as your passive crossovers will probably ad up to the same Just a thought |

Iīve thought about two mid/high-boxes so I need two filters. I will use an active crossover between the subs and the tops as I will need quite some power for the 1850s with Voids that passive crossovers would never handle. I know that it wont be cheap no matter what I do but lets face it, I have to go for some good horns to get the SPL so I have to do something. But by using passive crossovers I can cut out an amp and save at least a little bit.. I donīt know maybe Iīm wrong. Will I lose a lot in SQ by choosing passive crossovers in the tops? |

i honestly dont know i have never used passice xovers ive alwayz stuck with the active and have had no probs, i know a few guys that use passive xovers but they never use more than 1000rms but from my experience and what ive heard over the years i wouldnt use them in place of a active system which ever idea you choose you will need 2 amps and a active xover |

Yeah, that was exactly my thought. To speakers then..... What to use out of the alternatives that I wrote?(Others are ofcourse considerable too) What to use with what? |

really depends how big u wanna go- you can do the scoops and x15s off 1 big beefy amp-(bass on 1 side tops on the other) but if running 4 1850's and mt102's you will need 2 amps both systems would need an active xover |

I would recommend (for simplicity, cost, versatility given this is for a
school) single 18" reflex subs (half a G sub each, singles for
portability, scaleability, storage) with either X15's (make them much
smaller than the current plans!) or a 12"+1" version on top. You
could start with two subs and two tops then add more subs if necessary
then another pair of tops etc...
Having said all that, unless you're going to turn it into a school woodworking project you can now buy a lot of half decent ready-made kit for not a lot of money. Check out FBT. They make a whole range of very good B&C loaded boxes for sensible money. |

The crowd size is going to be between 300 and 800, both in door and outdoor. So the system has to deliver quite som pressure Iīve thought about building 18" reflexes but I doubt that they will throw the sound far enough?? Though they will indeed be easier to build, store and move.. The speakers would sometimes have to throw the sound like 150m, would reflex boxes be enough then?? Or are horns to prefer? |
