Hi folks
Would it be possible to do a regular x12 but without the ports? I now have two X1 and I´m about to built two HD15. And i have two X12 without a baffle , still not shure how to put into effect. So let´s assume I cross at 160Hz, do the ports have an effect at all then? I guess the main spl gain would be below the x-over freq, hence useless, please correct me if I´m wrong. So why not drop the ports and have all the positve effects of a sealed box? Plus I could fix a bigger horn in the cab due to the emerging space. The system will always be used as a whole, so the X12 will never be used fullrange. Do you think that is a good idea? i´m a beginner so feel free to disabuse me. thanks |

Well in theory that's a good idea. I suppose most people would want to retain the option of using the X12 as a "full range" box for smaller events eg where it is more convenient to take only tops and subs and leave out the kicks.
You could build one with ports and one without, using only screws and silicone sealant to attach/seal around the baffle for testing purposes. Then decide which you like better, take the temporary baffles out and install permanent ones properly with glue. More fiddling about = more fun :)

But there are no real positive effects of a closed box if you are only going to use it for mid and up. Why not keep the ports "just in case", I really do not see the point.
If you are certain that the box will never have any bass through it then use drivers better designed for that purpose i.e. small Xmax, large efficiency jobbies. Tony |

Well... the main reason for this move is, i want to use a bigger horn.
When i started out building i had not much clue about horns and things. Now as progressing and seeing other cabs i think i couldn´t live with that small horn. ![]() I really want to make the best out of this cab. The suggested drivers are not available any more so i have to use other parts anyway. The ONLY way to use an other horn in the original size is to change the ports, so I struggled the last months, how to shift the ports here and there with all different forms, but i think maybe i´m not competend enough to calculate the ports. Others say, it doesn´t matter very much what you calculate, unless you don´t test and measure it with mic and test programs etc. which i can do less than ever. So then I had the idea to drop the ports and have total freedom in arranging the rest, and i read everywhere how much better sealed enclosures sound. and i found a similar cab that looks really good and is also sealed: http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=neu-2-12lue.jpg As i said before, I´m not planning to use the x12 fullrange, so i can definitely live without the bass when i have a better horn in return. What i want to use is a Beyma CP755TI on a Beyma TD 365 horn. Not shure about the mids though. |

OK when you have decided on the drivers send me a pm and I will do some preliminary design for you with the box sealed and ported.

sure,
port size is 100mm. mid drivers are B&C 12 NDL 76, Beyma cp755ti for comps plus beyma td 365 horn. but don´t ask me about comparison, these are the only tops i ever build, but they sound really good as far as i can tell. |
